24 hours of the Northern Netherlands: Crossing borders, making connections
From 10 to 13 October, the European Week of Regions and Cities (EWRC) will take place in Brussels. We would like to draw your attention and invite you to our event ‘24 hours of the Northern Netherlands: Crossing borders, making connections’ during the EWRC.
On the 10th of October we launch our program with a ‘Festival of Innovations’ in the Résidence Palace in Brussels. We kick off with a keynote speech on ‘How to brand your region?’ by Mihalis Kavaratzis (university of Leicester), a well-known expert in the field of regional branding. After the plenary session, the festival continues by showing the latest innovative ideas and projects with impact, that our region has to offer. Of course, we are very interested in your innovative ideas and confident that together we can build new partnerships for wellbeing in our regions.
On the 11th of October the Northern Netherlands organizes several interesting workshops on a wide variety of themes.
Monday 10 October
18.00 – 18:30 Doors open with a drink and a bite.
18:45 – 19:30 Seminar with Mihalis Kavaratzis on ‘How to brand your region’.
19.30 – 23.00 Innovation tour
20.00 – 23:00 Network event with food, drinks and music.

On the 11th of October the Northern Netherlands organizes several interesting workshops on a wide variety of themes. Below you will find a short summary of all the workshops that will be organized in English.
Round 1: 11.00 – 12.15 hour
The European Energy Transition: This workshop will elaborate on the European Perspective towards the energy transition. The central question of this session is how the Northern Netherlands can grab a central role in the European energy transition. The workshop is organized in collaboration with the Heinrich Boll Stifftung and EUROCITIES. A speaker from EUROCITIES will elaborate on the Covenant of Mayors.
Healthy Ageing Hot Spots in the Northern Netherlands: The Northern Netherlands is a frontrunner in healthy ageing in Europe. During this workshop the Healthy Ageing Cluster of the Northern Netherlands will present itself to a European public. Themes that will be discussed include the opportunities for European, national and regional funding and cooperation with other regions in the area of Life Sciences & Health and Medical Technology.
Social Inclusiveness in practice in Leeuwarden, Belgium and Germany: The purpose of this workshop is to discuss the practical implementation of the inclusive society. The workshop will elaborate on an integrated approach towards combating poverty, creating employment and schooling. The city of Leeuwarden, the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2018, is the point of departure. The approach of Leeuwarden will be compared with the approaches used in Belgium and Germany. Participants are challenged to start a discussion with one another and learn from each other’s practices.
Cohesion by train: Cross-border regional development & infrastructure: This workshop will show participants the challenges and successes of a cross-border infrastructure project from a German and Dutch perspective. The process of attracting European subsidies is one of the major themes during this workshop. Purpose of this workshop is that by the end participants will know how to successfully execute cross-border infrastructure projects.
Round 2: 14.00 – 15.15 hour
Circular economy: Biobased: The provinces of the Northern Netherlands work together to accomplish the biobased economy through the North4Bio platform. Together the Northern Netherlands has been chosen as a leading example on how to reach a green economy. This workshop is dedicated to discuss the European opportunities for the green economy and how to attract investments. Cooperation with other EU regions is also a key theme.
Round 3: 15.30 – 16.45 hour
Circular economy: The main theme of the second workshop on the circular economy is the regional economic perspective of the circular economy and the chosen approach of the Northern Netherlands and other European regions.
Energy and Water (EnW) – crossover opportunities: The European collaboration project EnW links European regions and companies together in the field of crossovers between energy and water. The provisional results of this cooperation will be presented during this workshop. Cooperation with other European regions is also one of the subjects of this workshop.
Risk Management of Socio-Natural Disasters: This session is organized by the University of Groningen and elaborates on the opportunities for sustainable regional development that emerges out of disasters. The session explores a more integrated approach for risk management.
