The Grey Space in the Middle

Location: The Grey Space in the Middle21.10.2023 15:00 – 18:30What stays behind, on a pile after all other clothing has been chosen again for someone, an island of discarded things, a bag, a hat, jacket, or pants, weaving, painting, create patterns, destroy and solve, wear differently, stitch, paste, sew, hammer eyes, create presents, fetish gear with old clothes, a collage of textiles, or not a fashion item but a hug for someone sweet, a pillow for your cat. What if recycling is not a boring must, but an exciting new opening, not a single dress you will wear forever but 10 dresses you can reform again and again and again until there is an end. Imagine this would be fun?Other Workshops:Our workshop program delves into the practicalities of waste by making and doing, creating an accessible and engaging program for visitors regardless of age or background. As much as waste is part of a complex global network to be critically examined, our interactions with it are also part of our everyday lives. The activities explore various waste categories, including textile, food, electronic (e-waste), data and plastic waste. Participants can learn how to repair and reuse materials, prevent waste generation or create new objects from existing ones. The workshop weekend focuses on how we can engage with waste locally, where it can be found around us and how we might change our relationship with it.With contributions by: TrashUre Hunt!, Dragadina, Jipcat, Jamie Nee, Leonardo Scarin, and Maidie van den BosSaturday 21st of OctoberLocation: The Grey Space in the Middle, Streets of the Hague11:00 - 14:00Fishing Trash and Making the World with TrashUre HuntDuring this workshop, participants will be guided in making their own fish. The fish made will be displayed to create a wall of all these fish.The workshop is for any age, and there is plenty of room for the participant's creativity.The materials used are a mix of found materials, coloured paper and markers. This combination creates a beautiful result.During the next part, we will take these fish to the streets and playfully show the public that everything that ends up on the ground ends up in our home, the Earth.14:00 - 15:00Fishing Trash street parade with TrashUre HuntDuring this parade we will walk the fishes from the previous workshop during the streets of Den Haag and show the citizens that 'one persons trash, is another persons trasure'.15:00 - 18:30Textile upcycling workshops with Dragadina and JipcatThis workshop will teach participants how to transform second-hand cloths into new, stylish fashionable wearables.Sunday 22nd of OctoberLocation: The Grey Space in the Middle11:00 – 13:45No spice spilled with Maidie van den BosIn this Workshop we will be guided through our surrounding landscape and go foraging. Maidie will lead us to a new understanding of plants and fruits growing around us.14:00 – 16:00How to build a worm hotel with Jamie NeeWe will make a low-level worm bin out of used mayo buckets. It is a good way to get acquainted with worms for once and a start of a symbiosis between humans and worms. There will also be a comprehensive story about worms; for example, differences between worms, how to care for them and what to look out for to keep them happy. You will be given a handy worm menu card at the end.16:15 – 18:30Data Degrowth: cleaning a 'home' in our hands with Leonardo Scarin“Data Degrowth: cleaning a 'Home' in our Hands” is a design thinking workshop exploring methods and rituals to clean up the data storage in our smartphones.Together, we look into the theoretical framework of digital file management, Cloud services &amp; data footprint, touching upon their political and ecological aspects. Then, we review our own data habits and design custom rituals of “data cleansing”.PRACTICAL INFORMATIONTickets:To allow greater access, Wasteland 2023 offers a combination of free program parts and sliding-scale tickets for paid events and activities. For all paid program items, solidarity tickets are available for people with limited resources; please email us if you would like to use them.Venue and accessibility:Located in the city centre of the Hague, The Grey Space in the Middle is easily reachable by bike, public transport, or car. All spaces on the ground floor and the basement (via a lift) are accessible by wheelchair and mobility scooter. Please ask the staff for access to the lift. There is an accessible toilet on the ground floor.
