Aliens and End of Morality

Aliens and End of Morality

Overview

An interactive discussion about why encounters with alien forms of life can lead to ontological shock.

Aliens and the End of Morality

How do we relate to non-human intelligence? What would happen if the existence of hyperintelligent, non-human life-forms is scientifically confirmed? On the one hand, this might sound like exciting news. We are not alone in the universe! On the other hand, could we end up being even more alone? What if other forms of intelligence embrace morality that is radically different from ours? Or what if they have no morality at all? Sometimes this discussion is framed in terms of ontological shock - the idea that facing certain truths can be so overwhelming that our moral and social systems might collapse. Behind this idea is a broader question - what kind of discovery is enough to make us completely rethink our values? What could put into question our outlook on life?
