An Afternoon about Wear and Work

Nieuwe Instituut is het nationale museum voor architectuur, design en digitale cultuur. Nieuwe Instituut houdt zich bezig met de grote ontwikkelingen in de maatschappij, zoals de krapte op de woningmarkt, de energietransitie, de opkomst van kunstmatige intelligentie, mobiliteit of het gebruik van de publieke ruimte. Ontwerpers, waaronder architecten en digitale makers, kunnen aan die ontwikkelingen een belangrijke bijdrage leveren. Nieuwe Instituut toont het werk van ontwerpers, brengt mensen met elkaar in contact, verzamelt, ontwikkelt en deelt kennis.

Conversations, presentations and a temporary installation around Workwear

In collaboration with State of Fashion, the Nieuwe Instituut is hosting an afternoon around the exhibition Workwear, with conversations and presentations about work and workwear and the possibility to visit the temporary installation bodies that make, bodies that consume.Secondhand Speculation (Talk | 14:00-15:00 hr)In an interactive dialogue session, Sisterhood (<a href="https://studio-palha.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Zinzi de Brouwer</a> and <a href="https://theor.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Linda Valkemen</a>) explains the challenges that communities in the Global South are facing as the Global North is over flooding them with second-hand clothing. Explore how Indigenous craft and secondhand clothing can be the solution for future concepts and materials, and how systems can be set up to create a future landscape in which fashion can be mutually beneficial for the Earth and its inhabitants.bodies that make, bodies that consume (Temporary Installation | 15:00-16:00 hr)From 26 until 28 May 2023, the installation bodies that make, bodies that consume can be visited for free during opening hours of the Nieuwe Instituut. The installation reflects on amongst others the truth of workers and the conditions of workers for clothing manufacturers. The co-creators of the installation, Santiago Útima (Colombia), Siviwe James (South Africa), Widi Asari and Riyadhus Shalihin (Indonesia), hope to bridge the gap between ‘the hands that make’ and the ‘bodies that consume’ with a desire of addressing the various emotional and physical situations labourers endure.An Afternoon with: GmbH (Talk | 16:00-17:00 hr)As part of 'An Afternoon with', the series of talks with emerging and established international voices, the Nieuwe Instituut welcomes fashion collective <a href="https://gmbhgmbh.eu/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">GmbH</a> for a special talk during the afternoon which will be moderated by <a href="https://www.instagram.com/madeby8/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Shaquille Shaniqua Joy</a>. Together with the designers we talk about their practice, their inspirations and their fascination with workwear.This programme is organised in collaboration with State of Fashion and part of the exhibition <a href="https://nieuweinstituut.nl/en/projects/workwear" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Workwear</a>, on view at Nieuwe Instituut from 26 March to 10 September 2023.The installation bodies that make, bodies that consume by Santiago Útima, Siviwe James, Widi Asari and Riyadhus Shalihin at the Deck (on the first floor of the museum) is a special temporary exhibition in light of the talk and can be visited from 26 to 28 May 2023 for free during visiting hours of the Nieuwe Instituut.
