<h3>Synopsis</h3>2022 marks the 30th anniversary of Audre Lorde&#x27;s passing, the acclaimed Black lesbian feminist poet and activist. <a href="http://www.audrelorde-theberlinyears.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Audre Lorde – The Berlin Years 1984 to 1992 </a>explores a little-known chapter of the writer&#x27;s prolific life, a period in which she helped ignite the Afro-German Movement and made lasting contributions to the German political and cultural scene before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Lorde mentored and encouraged Black German women to write and publish as a way of asserting their identities, rights and culture in a society that isolated and silenced them, while she challenged white German women to acknowledge and constructively use their white privilege.This documentary contains audiovisual material from director Dagmar Schultz’s personal archive, including stunning images of Audre Lorde off stage. Audre Lorde published 15 volumes of poetry, the novel Zami – A New Spelling of My Name, and several volumes of essays, of which The Cancer Journals and Sister Outsider received worldwide attention. In 1991 Audre Lorde received the Walt Whitman Citation of Merit, which named her as Poet of the State of New York from 1991 to 1993. During the last eight years of her life she annually spent weeks and months in Berlin, Germany. Audre Lorde died at the age of 58 in her house in St. Croix in 1992 after 14 years of struggle with cancer. Despite her illness she was writing and politically active until the very end of her life.Audre Lorde&#x27;s incisive, often angry, and always brilliant writings and speeches defined and inspired the American feminist, lesbian, African-American, and women of color movements of the 1970s and 1980s. Her searing honesty and incisive analysis challenged all of those emerging communities to examine issues that heretofore had gone unseen and unnamed. One of the most celebrated icons of the second feminist movement, Lorde inspired several generations with her gripping poetry and prose which served as a catalyst for change and united the communities she belonged to: Black artists and Black liberation, women’s and gay liberation in the United States and worldwide.She continues to be read and discussed as part of the literary, feminist, social justice and human rights canons.♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦<h3>Director&#x27;s biography</h3>Dagmar Schultz was born in Berlin and started her studies at the Freie Universität Berlin before going to the University of Michigan to study film, television and journalism in 1963. During the 1960&#x27;s she was active in the Civil Rights Movement and the women&#x27;s movement. She taught at several colleges and universities. In 1973 she returned to Berlin and taught at the John F. Kennedy Institute of North American Studies at the Free University of Berlin. She co-founded the Orlanda Women&#x27;s Press in 1974 and remained its (co-) publisher until 2001. Dagmar Schultz arranged for Lorde to be invited as a Guest Professor at the John-F.-Kennedy Institute in 1984. Schultz edited Macht und Sinnlichkeit – Ausgewählte Texte (by Audre Lorde and Adrienne Rich) and Orlanda Women&#x27;s Press published further works by Audre Lorde. In 2011 Schultz was awarded the Margherita-von-Brentano-Price 2011 for work which furthers the equal rights of women in academia. The funds of the award contributed to the production of the film Audre Lorde – The Berlin Years 1984 to 1992 and to the establishment of an Audre Lorde Archive at the Free University of Berlin, which contains all of Schultz&#x27;s materials on Audre Lorde.
