Event description
How can we look after ourselves – how can I better look after me?

About this event

Some of us long for more sense of space in our daily life, or are curious to find out what that might be like. Setting time aside to do very little together with others, can be wonderfully regenerative. This meditation course welcomes anyone interested in practicing a gentle form of meditation, where we gradually develop our capacity to be with what is, at a pace that suits us. “What is” is not always easy, and we learn what to do then. The instructions are basic, and the practice gentle. This allows us to take small steps towards living our lives more deeply.

What will you learn:

The first purpose is to learn to be with yourself. For many of us, this is easier said than done. The course builds your capacity to try. This is important, because in this course, as in life, you don’t have to “succeed” to benefit from it. For many people, when we encounter challenges, it is a little easier when we are learning in a group and with a teacher. When we learn how to practice, gently, with challenges, they can be a source of deeper self-care and of insight. This is different from having to ‘solve’ our challenges (meditation can also have that effect, but as a side effect rather than an aim).

The second purpose is to develop insight. Insight means to better see what’s already there, present in me, and to live more peacefully with it. This is not the same as passivity or lack of change. We are always changing anyway. Cultivating a habit of stopping for a few moments; accepting as best we can what’s going on inside us at that moment (which may be non-acceptance); and over time noticing the peace of not having to act from impulses we find unhelpful; this is an approach which takes time to learn but is simple to do.

As we gradually become able to be with ourselves more, and see more of what is going on inside us, it also transforms our relationships with others. This usually takes more time than 4 weeks. However, 4 weeks will support you towards going in this direction, and discover if you want to continue.

Gradually building your capacity to be with yourself and accept when this isn’t possible in practice, gives insight which can be a tremendous help in other challenges you are dealing with.

What will we do?

This course is practical. You will learn simple exercises to practice returning to yourself again and again, returning to what is here and now. You will also learn how to share experiences with each other and listen deeply to ourselves and each other -- without giving advice. There will also be opportunities to receive guidance from the teacher one-on-one (with no additional cost).

If it seems that you have lost the practice, or forgotten to exercise, it’s not a problem -- you simply try again, being as gentle on yourself as you can. Through practicing like this, you begin to strengthen helpful habits in the body and the mind. Furthermore, by sharing this journey together of learning new habits of taking care of ourselves, strengthens a sense of community and can bring much joy. For example, together we develop the simple habit of hearing a bell sound as a “bell of awareness,” a reminder for each of us individually to be with ourselves for a moment. This can support many moments of peace in your daily life.

What to do after the course?

There are many opportunities to continue practicing what you learn in this course. We plan further courses, and also you can join an existing group or form a new one to continue practicing together. Practice in a group is recommended, but it is also possible to practice alone.

  • Learn how to develop peace in your daily life
  • Discover how to be present, and what to do when you can’t
  • Learn to be with yourself more of the time - when easy, and when not
  • This program is for beginners and experienced meditators interested in learning to practice a gentle form of meditation

A 1 hour 15 minute live-online session will be held each week for four weeks.

Each session will include an introduction to the day’s topic, sitting meditation (which also can be done lying down, standing or walking), and sharing (talking/reflecting) with each other. It is of great support for the group if everyone can be present for the full session, but saying something is always optional.

Interrelation of this course to other courses in the School of Self-Care:

Generally, other courses offered by the School of Self-Care support this course, and this course supports other courses mutually. They can be taken in any order. More specifically, this course gives a taste of meditation practice as an ingredient in daily life, including techniques that can support deepening our relationship with ourselves and others.

Please Note:

  • Each event will open 10 minutes prior to starting to provide you with time to login-in and get comfortable.
  • There will be a 15 minute interval during each session.
  • Sessions will not be recorded for privacy purposes.
  • After you have signed up for your program you will receive a Zoom link to enter our virtual self-care space.

Online support can be offered to attendees **Limited spaces available**. For more information about our program(s), online support, or general queries you are welcome to contact support@theschoolofselfcare.org.
