Welcome to Big Violin Baroque by the musical duo: Basso Infinito! Get ready to be inspired in an evening of baroque music at the Marnixzaal, Domplein in Utrecht on Friday July 18, 2025 at 20:00.
Come and hear 18th century music from Italy, Germany and France, played on cello and harpsichord! Each region had their own peculiarities and idioms and we’re looking forward to letting your taste the different flavours!
Maybe the most important part of baroque music is the bass line: it functions like a pulse that drives the music forward and is called basso continuo. Ideally the basso continuo is played by a combination of stringed bass instruments and chordal instruments like the harpsichord, organ and lute: the fatter the better!
The cello that has captured so many hearts, was not always the bass-melody string instrument of choice. It evolved from “big violins” in the 16th and 17th century, during which time the viola da gamba was actually the bass that reigned supreme. It speaks softer and with more room for reverb. An enormous amount of music was written for it through the whole of Europe. A reason why the cello turned out more popular in the end: they loved the bass! We will play music that was written for both the cello and the viola da gamba.
Don't miss this unforgettable evening of 1700s baroque music at Big Violin Baroque!
