&#x27;Building as Opera&#x27; is a site-sensitive audiovisual performance by artist Nina Glockner, based on and taking place at the Temple Tolstraat, a national monument located in Amsterdam Zuid. 
In 1927 a building with the shape of a quarter of a circle was constructed as a new temple for the Theosophical Society. After only 10 years, the function of the building began to change frequently. Since then it has been used as a synagogue, cinema, mosque, public library and temporary artist studio. Before it officially becomes a creative hub in 2021, visual artist Nina Glockner takes this unique moment of transition, in which the building is temporarily ‘out of function’ and brings together various voices from the past and the present. 
Based on her research around the history and the structure of the building, she will use movement, voice and sculptural elements for a live performance that will echo the important cultural and social consequences that the space has incorporated throughout its existence. 
In the context of a strong architectural environment and for the duration of a sunset, the audience will be witnessing a space in transition and a moment of togetherness in distance.

A special booklet was published for this occasion, including the essay ‘A Speaking Building’ by art historian Matisse Huiskens and designed by <a href="https://koenslothouber.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Koen Slothouber</a>; it will be available during the event or can be ordered via email sent to ninaglockner@gmail.com.

Nina Glockner is a visual artist mainly focussing on process and performativity translated to an audience via installations, (participatory) performances and publications. Within her practice she explores the thin line between executing control and being under a state of control and deals with (power) relationships among humans, objects and actions in a given space – ranging from public, institutional and organisational, to the private.
She holds a Master in Fine arts from Sandberg Institute, a Bachelor from Minerva Academie in Groningen, studied philosophy at Humboldt University Berlin and has recently been in residency at the Jan van Eyck Academy Maastricht.
