How can Europe contribute to promoting the environment and climate security in the Indo-Pacific?

The Indo-Pacific is a region with high vulnerability to climate-related hazards such as coastal, riverine flooding, heatwaves, and tropical storms. At the same time, the Indo-Pacific is a region that is experiencing rapid economic growth while coming to terms with the long-term threats of global warming and climate change.European states such as the Netherlands, France, and Germany, as well as the EU itself, have asserted in their respective Indo-Pacific strategies their willingness to cooperate with Indo-Pacific states to address the effects of climate change and respond to climate hazards in the region. But what can Europeans do to support climate security and mitigate the effects of climate change in the Indo-Pacific without alienating regional states? What opportunities for real collaboration are there? What mitigation or adaptation measures are available? What role could climate finance or emissions trading play?The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies is pleased to invite you to our latest in-person <a href="https://hcss.nl/europe-in-the-indo-pacific-hub/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Europe in the Indo-Pacific Hub</a> event: Climate security in the Indo-Pacific: How can Europe contribute? Dutch-French Dialogues on the Indo-Pacific. Dutch and French experts will come together for this event organized by HCSS in cooperation with the Embassy of France in the Netherlands and the Institut Français des Pays Bas to discuss climate security in the Indo-Pacific, as well as the role that European states could play in mitigating climate-related hazards in the region. S﻿peakers:<ul><li><a href="https://hcss.nl/expert/laura-birkman/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">L﻿aura Birkman</a>, Senior Strategic Analyst at HCSS and Head of the Climate and Security Programme. She leads a range of projects focusing on the security implications of climate change and represents HCSS in Water, Peace and Security (WPS), an award winning partnership that looks to pioneer the development of innovative tools and services that help identify and address water-related security risks. She is also a member of the International Military Council on Climate and Security (IMCCS).</li><li><a href="https://www.institutmontaigne.org/en/experts/joseph-dellatte" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Joseph Dellatte</a>, Research Fellow for Climate, Energy, and Environment at the institut Montaigne’s Asia Program. Joseph is also a Research Associate at Kyoto University (Japan) and a member of the Japanese Research Group on Renewable Energy Economics. He specializes in international climate policy and global climate governance, ETS linkage, and political barriers to carbon pricing development in the Northeast Asian region.</li><li><a href="https://dr.ntu.edu.sg/cris/rp/rp01764" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Alistair Cook,</a> Coordinator of the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Programme and Senior Fellow at the Centre for Non-Traditional Security Studies, S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Alistair&#x27;s research interests focus on humanitarian affairs, disaster governance, foreign policy and regional cooperation in the Asia-Pacific.</li><li><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicolas-regaud-6513b1102/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Nicolas Regaud,</a> Senior Advisor for climate to the Vice-Chief of the defence staff to the French Ministry of Defence. In October 2015 he organised the first International Conference of Defence ministers and high-level officials on climate change and its defence implications.
