Club Diaspora

This includes people with roots in Africa, the Caribbean, and North and South America. Literature with roots in the African continent forms the common thread in our selection of books, poems, and short stories. Together, we will discuss the stories and knowledge hidden within them. The book club is led by poets and performers Nicchelle Buyne and Daniëlle Zawadi.

With Club Diaspora, we want to create a space for conversation and reflection on life in the diaspora. By doing this together, we want to strengthen and facilitate our mutual connection. With the selected books, we explore themes such as migration, language, resistance, worldviews, and literary traditions (colonial heritage).

Due to the scope of the Afro-community, the book club will be in English.

In our final gathering of 2025, Nicchelle takes you on a journey to Suriname. As we near the 50th year of Surinamese independence (November 25), we’re reading We Slaves of Suriname by Anton de Kom. This literary classic is as heavy as it is necessary. Let’s evaluate: which parts are as relevant today, as when the book came out 91 years ago?

Club Diaspora is de nieuwe boekenclub voor de Afro-diaspora in de breedste zin van het woord.

Denk hierbij aan mensen met wortels in Afrika, het Caribisch gebied en Noord- en Zuid-Amerika. De literatuur met wortels uit het Afrikaanse continent vormt de rode draad in onze keuze van boeken, gedichten en korte verhalen. Samen gaan we in gesprek over de verhalen en de kennis die hierin verscholen liggen. De boekenclub wordt begeleid doordichters en podium makers Nicchelle Buyne en Daniëlle Zawadi.

Met Club Diaspora willen we een ruimte creëren voor gesprek en reflectie over het leven in diaspora. Door dit gezamenlijk te doen willen we onze onderlinge verbinding versterken en faciliteren. Met de gekozen boeken onderzoeken we thema’s als migratie, taal, verzet, wereldbeelden en literaire tradities. (Koloniale erfenis).

Omwille van de reikwijdte van de Afro-gemeenschap, zal de boekenclub Engelstalig zijn.
