Club Diaspora is the new book club for the Afro-diaspora in the broadest sense of the word.

This includes people with roots in Africa, the Caribbean, and North and South America. Literature with roots in the African continent forms the common thread in our selection of books, poems, and short stories. Together, we will discuss the stories and knowledge hidden within them. The book club is led by poets and performers Nicchelle Buyne and Daniëlle Zawadi.With Club Diaspora, we want to create a space for conversation and reflection on life in the diaspora. By doing this together, we want to strengthen and facilitate our mutual connection. With the selected books, we explore themes such as migration, language, resistance, worldviews, and literary traditions (colonial heritage).Due to the scope of the Afro-community, the book club will be in English.Calling all lovers of short stories! We’re reading <a href="https://www.bol.com/nl/nl/f/love-in-colour/9200000115820392/" title="https://www.bol.com/nl/nl/f/love-in-colour/9200000115820392/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Love in Colour</a> by Bolu Babalola.In this book, British-Nigerian author Babalola offers her own spin on mythical tales from around the world. Expect star-crossed lovers, financial troubles, mysterious elders, and more. While myths tend to focus on men, Babalola paints a world in which women take centre stage. Love in Colour offers us an entrypoint into the world of folktales. What stories have you been told by your elders? What do you take from the stories in Babalola’s book? Don’t worry if you haven’t read the entire book ahead of the session - we offer reading excerpts. For this session, we will focus on the story of Naleli (Chapter 8) in particular. This session is led by Surinamese-Dutch poet and performer Nicchelle Buyne. Due to the scope of the Afro-community, the book club is in English. However, you’re welcome to read the book in any language you’re comfortable in. <h3>Club Diaspora is de nieuwe boekenclub voor de Afro-diaspora in de breedste zin van het woord.</h3>Denk hierbij aan mensen met wortels in Afrika, het Caribisch gebied en Noord- en Zuid-Amerika. De literatuur met wortels uit het Afrikaanse continent vormt de rode draad in onze keuze van boeken, gedichten en korte verhalen. Samen gaan we in gesprek over de verhalen en de kennis die hierin verscholen liggen. De boekenclub wordt begeleid doordichters en podium makers Nicchelle Buyne en Daniëlle Zawadi.Met Club Diaspora willen we een ruimte creëren voor gesprek en reflectie over het leven in diaspora. Verwacht star-crossed lovers, financiële problemen, mysterieuze oudjes en meer. Waar mythen vaak over mannen gaan, schetst Babalola een wereld waarin vrouwen centraal staan.Love in Colour biedt ons een inkijkje in de wereld van volksverhalen. Welke verhalen hebben jouw ouderen je verteld? Wat haal je uit de verhalen in Babalola's boek?Maak je geen zorgen als je het hele boek nog niet hebt gelezen – we nemen fragmenten mee om tijdens de sessie te lezen. We richten ons deze keer met name op het verhaal van Naleli (hoofdstuk 8).Deze sessie wordt geleid door Surinaams-Nederlandse dichter en performer Nicchelle Buyne. Vanwege de diversiteit van de Afro-gemeenschap is de boekenclub afwisselend in het Engels en Nederlands, afhankelijk van de voorkeur van de deelnemers. Je mag het boek natuurlijk ook in het Nederlands lezen.
