Welcome to Club Gallery –Pigments: Colours of the MarineterreinForm Studies, April – June 2025
The tangible world is made up of materials - each with its own texture, shape, colour, sheen and scent. For designers, this offers a fascinating palette, especially now that many products and buildings need to be reinvented at the material level in order to create a sustainable society. The Form Studies programme at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture therefore takes the material itself as the starting point: an integral design approach that emphasises research, experimentation and the origin of materials.
Within this programme, coordinator Marlies Boterman invited peers and experts to guide students in designing through material research. For this series, pigment was the central theme. The artworks presented here are the result of this course. Students investigated natural pigments, their sources and applications, and translated their findings into spatial and visual experiments.
The exhibition Pigments: Colours of the Marineterrein presents pigments gathered from and inspired by, the site itself: soil, plants, lichens, algae, bark, and even steel. The works reveal muted tones and hidden hues, forming together an index of the Marineterrein.
This exhibition is both a study and an act of imagination: an exercise in looking closely at colour as process, as energy and as a reflection of the relationship between humans, material and environment.
This exhibition is an invitation to look differently: at colour as process, as research, as energy. We hope you will experience the richness and diversity of this pigment theatre, and take with you new ways of imagining the Marineterrein.
