Community Circle: Where Joy Takes Root

Community Circle: Where Joy Takes Root

Overview

OSCAM, ARTNOIR, Up Close and OBA join forces to host a Community Circle in response to the group exhibition "Watering a Black Garden"

Watering a Black Garden x Up Close Community Circle: Where Joy Takes Root

On Tuesday, March 24, OSCAM, ARTNOIR, OBA, and Up Close join forces to host a Community Circle in response to the group exhibition Watering a Black Garden, currently on view at OSCAM until May 6th. The exhibition reimagines joy as a radical practice of tending and becoming. It positions Black and Brown women as visionaries of joy, framing it as an intentional practice of care, nourishment, and rootedness in Black women’s lives.

Against the backdrop of the exhibition, the OSCAM x Up Close Community Circle invites participants to dissect and share their own perceptions of joy in an intimate, open setting. The conversation will examine joy through the lens of individual and collective nourishment, discussing rest, resistance, and creativity. What practices of care allow us to water our own garden? What part does memory play in the process of joyful creativity and co-creation? What role do choice and agency have in living a joyful life? These are some of the questions we will dive into together.

For this exhibition, OSCAM, ARTNOIR, and the artist featured in Watering a Black Garden have curated a reading list and playlist in collaboration with OBA. The reading list, featuring authors like bell hooks and Saidiya Hartman, inspired the prompts and themes that guide our conversation. A limited selection of the reading list is currently available at OBA Bijlmerplein.

About Up Close

Up Close is a people-driven initiative rooted in collective growth through intentional exchange. They bring people together to share knowledge, spotlight inspiring bodies of work, and create a space where inspiration and support take centre stage. They operate as a connector between people, spaces, and disciplines.

Their Circles are intimate, purpose-driven gatherings to recharge our creative batteries, bounce ideas off peers, and dive into shared experiences, dreams, and obstacles. They function as a third space for grounding and co-creating where exchange flows with intention. Participants can expect a laid-back setting with prompts, question cards, and creative exercises anchored in a specific theme. Although each edition takes place under a particular theme, the conversation openly flows wherever it feels called to.

Watering a Black Garden x Up Close Community Circle: Where Joy Takes Root

Over Up Close
