GATHERING 6 duneing: Eco Fiction & Speculative Futures

Guest: Daniela Pessoa de Goes Calmon
Hosts: Karolina Rupp & Irene Charlotte Jahn

In this session there is an invitation to engage with speculative fiction and to "choose our own adventure". We can choose a path of wondering together how the dystopias we are facing today relate to science fiction. Or we can take a calmer walk in the dunes to wonder how fiction and storying also inspire us to build radically different futures. In this gathering, we decide together in the here and now what path we take.

Bio: Daniela Calmon is a PhD Researcher in the Political Ecology Research Group at the International Institute of Social Studies. She is a late-stage PhD candidate currently writing her dissertation. Her main research focuses on the interplay of strategies, discourses, symbols, and imaginaries of multinational corporations and investors involved in natural resource sectors with those of transnational environmental and social movements and civil society networks. Her region of focus is the transition of the Amazon and Cerrado in Northern Brazil (Maranhão, Piauí and Pará), especially through their connection to multi-scalar climate and land politics. Her current broader research interests include corporate politics, frontier-making, critical discourse analysis, eco-fiction, and interplay of myths and metaphor.

The EcoBody Collective is back with a second iteration of their gatherings, called ecobodying (a verb rather than noun) in an attempt to widen even more what ecofeminism can literally do. In other words, a little shift away from Ecobodyism towards ecobodying.

In the upcoming four sessions in November and December we will welcome one guest per gathering who will guide us through the evening. This time, the EcoBody Collective invited researchers from the Erasmus University Rotterdam to fill the spaces at WEST Den Haag with embodied content and to discover non-linear ways of sharing their knowledge. They will build on previous dialogues and experiences seeking to explore different methods of putting academia, art and activism in dialogue with each other. All together we will be connecting the dots between different strands of political ecology, decoloniality, and ecofeminism—all to be experienced in an accessible, embodied manner.

Each event includes a shared meal.
