Cultuurhaven x The Ecobody Collective #7
Overview
GATHERING 7 seaing: Tracing Material Waste - an embodied encounter with the discarded
Guest: Ilaha Abasli
Hosts: Karolina Rupp & Irene Charlotte Jahn
What we discard, returns.
In this session, we encounter what the North Sea has refused - materials washed ashore along The Hague's coastline. Through embodied practice, we trace these objects not as waste, but as travelers: matter displaced, relocated, estranged from its intended place. This is an invitation to thinking-with-hands and body, to practicing a kind of attention that refuses the categories of clean and dirty, valuable and discarded.
Bio: Ilaha Abasli is a PhD researcher at the International Institute of Social Studies (Erasmus University Rotterdam). She writes on climate change, material circularity, and its social aspects in the context of the Global South. Ilaha’s research interests include circular economy in the Global South, especially the social and political dimension of waste flows. She is also a cultural editor for the Contrapuntal Platform, where she curates visual essays on art, ecology and society.
The EcoBody Collective is back with a second iteration of their gatherings, called ecobodying (a verb rather than noun) in an attempt to widen even more what ecofeminism can literally do. In other words, a little shift away from Ecobodyism towards ecobodying.
In the upcoming four sessions in November and December we will welcome one guest per gathering who will guide us through the evening. This time, the EcoBody Collective invited researchers from the Erasmus University Rotterdam to fill the spaces at WEST Den Haag with embodied content and to discover non-linear ways of sharing their knowledge. They will build on previous dialogues and experiences seeking to explore different methods of putting academia, art and activism in dialogue with each other. All together we will be connecting the dots between different strands of political ecology, decoloniality, and ecofeminism—all to be experienced in an accessible, embodied manner.
