De zang van Azerbeidzjan

Hij was de allereerste artiest ooit die voor de nationale Azerbeidzjaanse televisie een Nederlands nummer zong, en hij zou voor Nederland uitkomen in het (uiteindelijk nooit uitgevoerde) Türkvizyon Songfestival: ‘Elcan Rzayev’. De in Bakoe geboren zanger en componist woont sinds 1999 in Nederland en laat de verschillende culturen in zijn achtergrond maar al te graag meewegen in zijn artistieke profiel. Hij groeide op in het Azerbeidzjan dat nog onderdeel was van de Sovjet-Unie, en is dus opgegroeid met de Russische, Azerbeidzjaanse en Engelse taal. Later voegde hij daar de Nederlandse taal en cultuur aan toe. In zijn muziek komt duidelijk een Europees karakter naar voren, maar zijn ook zijn oorspronkelijke roots nog altijd terug te horen. Op vrijdagmiddag 17 juli is Elcan Rzayev aanwezig bij het Open Paviljoen, waar hij met zijn zang het Spuiplein zal opluisteren.

Het Open Paviljoen is een plek voor ontmoeting, uitwisseling en verbeelding. Van 13 juni tot en met 19 juli 2026 bieden we ruimte aan een cultureel programma met workshops, gesprekken, performances en lezingen. Lokale initiatieven, nationale stemmen en internationale denkers ontmoeten elkaar in een open setting waarin kunst niet alleen wordt getoond, maar actief onze samenleving vormt.

He was the very first artist ever to sing a Dutch song for Azerbaijani national television, and he was set to represent the Netherlands in the (ultimately never held) Türkvizyon Song Festival: ‘Elcan Rzayev’. The singer and composer, born in Baku, has lived in the Netherlands since 1999 and is keen to let the different cultures in his background inform his artistic profile. He grew up in Azerbaijan when it was still part of the Soviet Union, and thus grew up with the Russian, Azerbaijani, and English languages. Later, he added the Dutch language and culture to this mix. His music clearly has a European character, while his original roots remain audible. On Friday afternoon 17 July, Elcan Rzayev will be present at the Open Paviljoen, where he will enliven Spuiplein with his singing.

The Open Paviljoen is a place for encounter, exchange, and imagination. From 13 June to 19 July 2026, it will host a cultural programme featuring workshops, conversations, performances, and lectures. Local initiatives, national voices, and international thinkers come together in an open setting where art is not only presented, but actively shapes our society.
