Every month, democracy advocates, thinkers and enthusiasts meet up at informal networking events known as #DemocracyDrinks.

We all need a sense of wellbeing in our lives. So, to kick off the #democracydrinks season, on 24 September we have invited Dorine van Norren to speak about her research on global wellbeing and development viewed from the African philosophy of Ubuntu. Ubuntu dictates that wellbeing is rooted in community. To achieve harmony in society, one has to put the community before oneself. One’s happiness depends on the happiness of others —"I am because we are" or "humanity towards others" (in Zulu: umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu). What can we learn from Ubuntu and how can Ubuntu help shape development, sustainability, democracy and human rights? - where the western liberal view of democracy is much more focussed on individual needs and happiness. But can one find happiness in a society that doesn't put the community first? These questions will be posed to Dorine by NIMD's Tayuh Ngenge, programme and knowledge Expert. Dorine van NorrenDorine van Norren is an associate researcher at the Van Vollenhoven Institute and the University of Pretoria, with expertise in law and development studies. Holding a master's in international and Dutch law, and a PhD focused on the interdisciplinary view of Sustainable Development Goals from Bhutan (Happiness), Ecuador (Buen Vivir) and South Africa (Ubuntu), she has a strong educational background from Amsterdam, South Africa, and France. Her career includes diplomatic roles in Sri Lanka and Turkey, and several other positions within the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including her current role as Strategic Advisor for North and South America and the Caribean. Tayuh NgengeNgenge's work at NIMD is centred on promoting responsive politics and political institutions. As the theme lead on responsive politics, he is a key member of the programme and knowledge team. His past work includes exploring courts, constitutions, and democratization processes. He has also contributed to and edited various works on constitutional transitions, notably in African courts, with his research being published in platforms like Foreign Policy, Devex, and Open Democracy. What are the Democracy Drinks?#DemocracyDrinks brings together democracy advocates, thinkers and enthusiasts at our monthly informal networking events. It is a great way of making new contacts and catching up with people you know; for testing ideas and planning actions; for moral support and inspiration. Feel free to invite friends and colleagues that work on or are interested in defending values like democracy, rule of law, human rights… Come along and you will be made welcome!This event series is a collaboration between the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC) and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) and The Hague Humanity Hub.#DemocracyDrinks were launched in 2018 by Defend Democracy Executive Director Alice Stollmeyer. Over time, #DemocracyDrinks have expanded their reach and have been organized in Aarhus, Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, Copenhagen, Kathmandu, Montreal, The Hague and Washington DC, and soon also in other cities. The events attract a lively mixture of people from NGOs, international institutions, think tanks, national governments and representations, academia, public affairs consultancies, social businesses and other active citizens.
