Design for Change #1: Grafisch ontwerp voor Gaza

Nieuwe Instituut is het nationale museum voor architectuur, design en digitale cultuur. Nieuwe Instituut houdt zich bezig met de grote ontwikkelingen in de maatschappij, zoals de krapte op de woningmarkt, de energietransitie, de opkomst van kunstmatige intelligentie, mobiliteit of het gebruik van de publieke ruimte. Ontwerpers, waaronder architecten en digitale makers, kunnen aan die ontwikkelingen een belangrijke bijdrage leveren. Nieuwe Instituut toont het werk van ontwerpers, brengt mensen met elkaar in contact, verzamelt, ontwikkelt en deelt kennis.

Aan de hand van de beeldtaal, symboliek en maatschappelijke impact van uitingen als posters bespreken vormgevers Sana Iqbal, Rasha Dakkak en Anja Groten hoe grafisch ontwerp kan worden ingezet als protestmiddel. Directeur Aric Chen van het Nieuwe Instituut begeleidt de bijeenkomst. Boekhandel Limestone Books verzorgt een tijdelijke boekentafel met publicaties die met het thema te maken hebben.

Het instituut biedt uiteenlopende professionals uit deze sectoren een platform om in een constructieve dialoog kennis en ervaringen uit te wisselen en zo verschillende perspectieven op complexe kwesties samen te brengen.Limestone Books Het curatorenteam achter Limestone Books beschouwt het zelf niet als een traditionele, winstgedreven boekhandel. De commerciële invalshoek helpt hen om experiment in het kunst-uitgeverswezen te stimuleren. Limestone verkoopt kunstboeken, maar richt zich nadrukkelijk op niet-westerse perspectieven en ondervertegenwoordigde stemmen. Met leesclubs en presentaties verbindt de boekwinkel internationale kunstenaars en ontwerpers aan lokale publieksgroepen.

Drawing on the visual language, symbolism and social impact of posters and other media, designers Sana Iqbal, Rasha Dakkak and Anja Groten discuss how graphic design can be used as a means of protest. Aric Chen, director of the Nieuwe Instituut, moderates the discussion. Limestone Bookshop presents a temporary display table with publications related to the theme.

As a co-founder of <a href="https://hackersanddesigners.nl/" title="https://hackersanddesigners.nl/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Hackers &amp; Designers</a>, she will discuss <a href="https://hackersanddesigners.nl/tools" title="https://hackersanddesigners.nl/tools" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">open source design tools</a> and decolonial technology in the collective’s practice and show the work she has created for <a href="https://nieuweinstituut.nl/en/projects/forms-of-ex-change" title="https://nieuweinstituut.nl/en/projects/forms-of-ex-change" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Forms of (ex-)Change</a>. On the occasion of the Leipzig Book Fair 2024, an eponymous temporary collective of designers and design students was invited by the Nieuwe Instituut to create work around the idea of “change” in the broadest sense of the word. Due to the current political and cultural climate in Germany, this presentation was no longer possible. Instead, the exhibition can be seen at the Nieuwe Instituut until 6 October.Design for Change This new series of events will explore how design, digital culture and architecture can respond to the pressing humanitarian issues of our time. Through Design for Change, the Nieuwe Instituut provides a platform for designers, architects, digital makers and other cultural practitioners to share knowledge and experience in discussions that offer different perspectives on complex challenges.
