About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours 30 minutes

Hi there !

In this event we will discuss, connect and bring inspiration to each other by talking about the science of understanding the Universe, black holes, the big bang and other such topics :)

In our group we are usually talking about Space and the final frontier, and other interesting topics in an non-formal, relaxed environment. Our discussions revolve around topics ranging from space exploration(human, robotic) to astrophysics, exoplanets, Science fiction, or we can talk about something different like our place in the universe as a species - we live on a giant spaceship - some call it Spaceship Earth - we sometimes talk about the challenges and opportunities in the age of AI and the accelerating change that we live in. All in all, it is usually a very interesting and entertaining discussion, so it should be fun :)

Our events are hybrid - both in person and online in order to accommodate both options. If you cannot find us or if you need help in connecting, contact us at +31615466090 (Dragos).

Make sure you check again this page for updates before the event. Thanks !

More about our meetings in general: The format of the meetings is open and flexible. This group is addressed to anyone who finds these topics interesting enough to come and meet others with similar interests and to explore knowledge together. The meetings are in no way addressed to researchers or people active in science areas - in fact the more diverse backgrounds people have, the more interesting the dynamic of the discussions will be. If you will like the meetings, anyone can propose topics for future discussions.

Agenda for the event:

19:00 Walk in(connecting) and get comfortable

19:10 Check-in and a short presentation about our discussion group

19:20 Short discussion about the interests of every participant and here each attendee can propose a discussion topic. If we have too many topics we will take a vote to decide which topic to discuss.

19:40 We'll start with a few space news or a presentation on a specific topic

20:00 Let's start a discussion about topics such as Planetary Science, Space Exploration, Science Fiction, etc

20:45 closing and check-out :)

21:00 We many times also stay longer if anyone wants to continue the discussion (we often do this and it's fun but it's not a requirement, of course)

And if you have ideas or topics that you would like us to address in our events - let's discuss these together - we are open to new events proposals.

In fact if any of you are interested, any of the participants can prepare a 10-20 minute talk/presentation on any given topic ranging from space exploration to science fiction, etc. And also at the beginning of the event we will invite everyone to propose discussion topics and then if there are more than 2 we will take a vote as to which topic to discuss.

Our events are hybrid - both in person and online in order to accommodate both options. If you cannot find us or if you need help in connecting, contact us at +31615466090 (Dragos).

Frequently asked questions

Is this event only for researchers, scientists, etc ?

Our events are addressed to a wide audience - ranging from beginners in understanding the universe all the way to experienced researchers or amateur astronomers. What brings us together is our fascination for astronomy. In fact the more diverse the viewpoints the more interesting the conversations.

How do you manage to address both the beginner topics and the in depth physics and cosmology ?

The events have the format of a dialogue between everyone present and we always adapt the dialogue in such a way so that we can all enjoy this exploration together. There is no wrong question - in fact the exploration of even basic questions can lead to deep discussions.

I am a scientist/researcher / my knowledge is more advanced. Will I get bored?

No - we think not. We hope that you will find yourself in good company :) Several of our members have more in depth knowledge on a variety of topics and in fact we have a sub-group , a study group of people that want to learn more. And often we find that we learn from each other, even the pros :)

I am interested more in telescopes, astrophotography, etc. Is this the right place for me?

Yes, we do go to view the sky through the telescope, and for stargazing in general. We collaborate with VSA - volkssterrenwachtamsterdam.nl and you will find here experienced people when it comes to telescopes and astrophotography. If interested in this get, in touch with us +31615466090 (Dragos)

If my child is interested in astronomy, can I also bring my child to the event ?

When children have this fascination about the universe and the curiosity and drive to learn as much as possible about these topics, we saw that they can also benefit from and enjoy our discussions. To the extent that they are not loud or disturbing the attendees, children are very welcome.

How can I access the event online?

You can join us online from your laptop, tablet, phone, etc by going to https://meet.jit.si/Discussing_about_the_Universe_Life_and_Everything_meetup If you access the link from your tablet or phone you might need to install the free Jitsi app first.

Organized by

I have always had a fascination for Astrophysics and Cosmology and I've tried to learn as much as possible about the Universe, physics and science in general. I have a background in research in geology, paleoclimatology and planetary science. I enjoy science fiction as well ranging from Isaac Asimov to Star Trek. I have an interest in education and in bringing the joy of exploring the universe and understanding science and research topics - bringing this to the public - bridging the gap between people interested or curious about science and the research world. Since 2018 I have been organizing events that enable this exploration of the universe and bringing like minded people together. Over the years we have formed an amazing group of cosmos-exploring enthusiasts - I am very grateful to have met these wonderful people - together we form the group of Discussing about the Universe, Life and Everything.
