Introduction

What are the opportunities and threats of (generative) AI for democracy and elections in Europe? Join our online panel on June 6th at 16:00 CET, with leading academic experts Prof Kate Dommett and Prof Claes de Vreese and POLITICO’s AI and election expert Mark Scott.

The AI, Media and Democracy Lab aims to bring together different perspectives from research and practice. The format is interactive, with short pitches and plenty of room for questions and interaction. The event will be organised online.


Panelists

Claes de Vreese

Claes de Vreese is University Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Society, with a special focus on media and democracy at the University of Amsterdam. He holds the Chair in political communication at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research ASCoR. He is the co-director of ALGOSOC: Public Values in the Algorithmic Society and the AI, Media & Democracy Lab. He is also external Chair of Social Sciences in the Danish Institute for Advanced Studies DIAS and founding Scientific Director of the Digital Democracy Center at the University of Southern Denmark.


Kate Dommett

Kate Dommett is Professor of Digital Politics in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Sheffield and her research focuses on digital technology and democratic politics, with a particular focus on data use, election campaigns and regulation. She is interested in how politics is being changed by the uptake of digital technology, and how democratic institutions are adapting to use online affordances. Her recent research has looked at the use of personal data for political campaigning, political advertising, and the regulation of digital politics.


Mark Scott

Mark Scott is Chief Technology Correspondent at POLITICO, writing about the global collision of technology and politics. Prior to joining POLITICO, Mark was the European Technology Correspondent for the New York Times where he covered the Continent’s response to Silicon Valley’s tech giants, the region’s push into the digital world, and the expansion of Europe’s own technology, media and telecommunications scene. He joined the New York Times as its European finance reporter during the recent global financial crisis.
