About this event

Join the EAB at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research from September 22 to September 24 in Darmstadt, Germany, and dive into the latest advancements in biometrics with experts from around the world.

Biometric research has continuously paved the way for enhanced, more secure, and personalised services, from secure authentication for commercial transactions or access to government services to patient monitoring and other forms of identification. In recent years, the use of biometric technologies has increased and permeated multiple spheres of everyday life. Therefore, in line with its mission to promote the responsible use, deployment, and adoption of modern digital identity systems, the European Association for Biometrics (EAB) has strived to create spaces where different actors concerned with biometric innovation can discuss the latest developments in research and engage in cross-sectoral dialogue, sharing insights and best practices across different use cases.

For the past 12 years, the EAB Research Projects Conference (EAB-RPC) has provided a forum for knowledge exchange and networking, and it has become the largest event on research funded by the European Union in the area of Biometrics and Identity Management. This is a yearly event organised with the support of the Joint Research Center, DG HOME, Fraunhofer IGD, and Halmstadt University.

From September 22 to September 23, the EAB-RPC will welcome back several biometrics projects funded under the Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe programmes, as well as national research projects and keynote speakers from EU agencies. In addition, this year we are proud to co-organise special sessions with the European Commission’s Community for European Research and Innovation (CERIS) and the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

    Find all the details below.

    EAB x CERIS (23-24 September)

The Community for European Research and Innovation for Security (CERIS) is an innitiative of the European Commission aiming to facilitatie interactions within the security research community and its end-users. CERIS seeks to analyse identified capability gaps, translate them into research needs, and identify solutions, while integrating the views of citizens.

This year, the EAB and CERIS co-organise their first partnership event: Biometrics in Action for Border Management & Fight Against Crime and Terrorism. This free event will serve as a forum for exchange among actors in research and innovation on biometrics and digital identity, applied to border management, crime prevention, and counterterrorism. Over the course of two days, participants will have the chance to partake in a dynamic prgramme, including live demonstrations, scenario-based discussions, and collaborative roundtables featuring practitioners, policymakers, and researchers, as well as discussions on critical topics like AI-related threats.

NOTE: Are you a subscriber of the CERIS Newsletter wishing to attend the EAB-RPC? Check your inbox and purchase your tickets at a discounted price through the latest newsletter.

    EAB Academy Training (24 September)

For almost a quarter of a century, National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) has been the foremost evaluator of biometric technologies. As an independent government laboratory, its face, fingerprint, iris, and speech technology evaluations have been credited with driving recognition accuracy forward. Drawing from these insights, Patrick Grother will deliver a training focused on biometric performance, discussing key performance aspects across the biometric lifecycle – from enrollment, attack detection, duplicate detection, quality analysis through to the authentication, and one-to-many identification.

The training will address the main drivers of recognition failure, such as detection, quality, ageing, compression, twins and demographic effects, active attack, and the human role. In addition, Patrick will cover recent standards, performance testing, and the use of synthetic data.

    Frequently asked questions
