Op donderdag 16 oktober duiken we diep in de complexe geschiedenis van dekolonisatie in de Caribische eilanden binnen het Nederlands koninkrijk: Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint-Eustatius en Sint-Maarten. Dit programma verkent niet alleen het verleden, maar ook de doorwerking ervan op de levens van jonge creatives in Nederland vandaag.

We beginnen met een mini-lezing over de (de)koloniale geschiedenis en opheffing van de Caribische eilanden, met aandacht voor verzet tegen kolonialisme en de huidige doorwerking en de ontwikkeling van de Caribische gemeenschap in Nederland. Het hart van de avond vormt een panel met drie creatives die vanuit hun persoonlijke ervaring spreken over de impact van dekolonisatie en cultureel bewustzijn op hun leven en werk. Hoe navigeren zij door hun identiteit als diaspora? Welke verhalen willen zij vertellen?

We sluiten af met een krachtige voordracht over de werkelijke impact van dekolonisatie op de eilanden zelf. Wat is er daadwerkelijk veranderd? En wat blijft er nog te doen?

On Thursday, October 16th, we will dive deep in the complex history of decolonization of the ABC- and SSS-islands: Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint-Eustatius en Sint-Maarten. This program does not only cover the past, but also the impact on the lives of young creatives in the Dutch kingdom today.

We will start with an introduction about the (de)colonial history and the dissolution of the Caribbean islands. It will focus on anti-colonial resistance, its present-day effects and the Caribbean community in European Netherlands. The heart of the night is shaped by a panel with creatives who will speak from personal experience about the impact of decolonization and the cultural awareness on their lives and work. How do they navigate their identity as a diaspora? What stories do they want to tell?

We will close the event with a powerful reading about the real impact of decolonization on the islands. What has actually changed? And what still needs to change?
