However, the fact that photonic, nano, and quantum technology can provide solutions to these global problems remains largely unknown to many. Addressing these major dilemmas requires an approach in which technology plays a central role. Key enabling technologies in general – and photonics, nano, and quantum technology in particular – are therefore in the spotlight when it comes to the strategic plans of businesses and governments. These technologies enable, for instance, secure communication, the development of smarter and more cost-effective sensors, and the creation of highly targeted medicines. Participants can expect to hear examples from practice. 11:15 Session A: PHOTONICS – Three Projects 1) 11:15 - 11:35 Focus on Photonics As a field that is developing rapidly and impacts many other fields, photonics has been identified as a key enabling technology. This contribution will focus on photonics instrumentation for sensing and measurement in practical applications. Several (spectral) imaging and fiber optics sensing technologies will be highlighted: low cost spectral imaging and contactless stem size measurement for agri and horti-culture, and a concept for measuring the bending of a catheter with fiber sensors. The latest developments regarding the Integral Plan on Optics and Photonics will also be shared. Steven van den Berg Professor Photonics The Hague University of Applied Sciences 2) 11:35 - 11:55 Experimental education in photonics for physics professionals at Fontys At the physics research group in Fontys we are working on photonics setups with Photonic Integrated Circuits, fiber optics and understanding in quantum photonics. In this talk Inge Leermakers provides insight in the current setups, projects and goals. Together with teachers we want to educate the future technical professionals. We are always open for more collaboration. They are committed to not only pushing the boundaries of quantum applications but also preparing the next generation of researchers and engineers through hands-on training and education in quantum photonics. Tjeerd Bollmann Senior Researcher and Lecturer at the research group Applied Nanotechnology Saxion University of Applied Sciences 2) 14:35 - 14:55 There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom Three research subjects on quantum technology at the AUAS will be highlighted: · Quantum Sensing of underground infrastructure: by using NV-centers in diamonds we can with high resolution measure magnetic fields and so detect cables, pipes and other material in the underground. · Using Quantum Machine Learning to enhance the precision of simulation used for X-ray analysis of chemical spectra: in this project more accurate modelling of the electron states in atoms and ions will lead to more accurate modelling of the X-ray photons that emerge at electron transitions from higher to lower quantum states. · Quantum Organisational Readiness Levels for business: what organisations should do when there is a wish to use quantum computing in their workflow with a reference to the European Competence Framework on Quantum Technology. <h3>BIOGRAPHIES OF THE SPEAKERS:</h3> Marten Teitsma is professor by special appointment of Applied Quantum Computing at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) since 1 September 2020. He is a member of the education team of Quantum Delta Netherlands, organising Quantum Talent and Learning Centres, a professional master Applied Quantum Technology and lots of other educational activities. Together with Dutch banks and others he developed a workshop General Awareness Quantum Computing for laymen, at the AUAS a minor Applied Quantum Computing and a program Technical Physics with specialisation Quantum Technology. His research focusses on Quantum Software Engineering, Quantum Sensing and responsible use of Quantum Computing.

Jetske Verkerk is member of the leadership team of the Directorate Innovation and Knowledge of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and as such responsible for strategy, applied science top institutes, aerospace. Currently with focus on the Dutch long term strategy for space. Jetske Verkerk has broad European experience as HoU for EU affairs at the Dutch Ministry for Infrastructure and Water Management, focusing on transport and environment (2015-2020). She worked as Attache for the same Ministry for both the Dutch Permanent Representation to the EU and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Brussels. Being a civil engineer herself, technological innovations are close at heart. One of her challenges is to increase the impact (valorisation) of the knowledge gained for suitable societal and economic purposes.

<ul><li>Cas Damen (1968) studied Applied Physics at the University of Twente, from which he graduated in 1993 on the rheology of latex suspensions. Subsequently, he did his PhD under supervision of dr. Dave Blank and prof. Horst Rogalla in the field of thin filsm of high-Tc superconductors. In 1998, he became co-founder and CTO of Twente Solid State Technology BV, a company specialised in equipment for thin film deposition for nanotechnology research. Over 20 years Cas Damen has turned the company into a leading supplier for the worldwide scientific community. The company is currently part of the Demcon group. In 2014, Cas Damen was appointed professor Applied Nanotechnology at Saxion University of Applied sciences. His research interests are on the intersection of nanotechnology and physics, with a strong focus on chip-based technologies, with special interest in sensor technologies, photonics and quantum technology.</li></ul>

Dr. Steven van den Berg is a professor in Photonics at The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS). He obtained a PhD in experimental physics at Leiden University in 2002, after which he worked as a (senior) researcher at VSL on various optical technologies, ranging from ultra-accurate distance measurements with frequency comb lasers, to the calibration of light sources and detectors for space applications. In 2021, he started the Photonics research group at THUAS, which has the mission to contribute to a healthy world and a sustainable economy by making photonics technology applicable in practice. The main areas of expertise of the research group are spectroscopy, (spectral) imaging technology and fiber optic sensors. The research focuses primarily on optical sensor technology for the application areas of agri &amp; food, health and structural health monitoring. Steven represents the universities of applied sciences (UAS) as a board member of PhotonicsNL. He is also UAS point of contact for the key enabling technology ‘Optical systems and integrated Photonics’ of the National Technology Strategy.

Zeger Vroon (1967) studied Chemistry at the University of Utrecht and completed his PhD in 1995 at the University of Twente on the subject of 'Preparation and transport properties of thin zeolite MFI membranes'. From 1995 -2024 he worked at TNO Eindhoven on the preparation of inorganic and hybrid coatings by means of sol-gel processing for the energy (nuclear, petrochemical and solar energy) and high-end equipment market. In 2010 Zeger Vroon started as a special professor on the subject of PV integrated in products, coatings on glass and electrical storage. He works in various projects on demonstrating and monitoring innovative BIPV products, batteries and thermochromic windows. Zeger Vroon will work as a lecturer at Zuyd University of Applied Sciences in Heerlen from 2024.

John Bolte has over 25 years of experience in electromagnetic and optical sensing applications. He has a PhD in Physics (TU Delft) and is a registered epidemiologist (Amsterdam Free University, VU). Since September 2016, John chairs the research group Smart Sensor Systems at <a href="https://www.thuas.com/research/research-groups/smart-sensor-systems" title="https://www.thuas.com/research/research-groups/smart-sensor-systems" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Hague University of Applied Sciences</a>. The motto is: Prevention through Prediction: keeping machines, plants, animals and humans healthy. In 2020 he was appointed director of the <a href="https://www.thuas.com/research/centre-expertise/centre-expertise-digital-operations-finance" title="https://www.thuas.com/research/centre-expertise/centre-expertise-digital-operations-finance" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Centre of Expertise Digital Operations and Finance</a>. Smart Sensor Systems counts 17 group members working in 10 grant projects (2 EU, 1 FSM, 3 NWA-ORC, 2 SIA, 1 DoIoT, 1 RWS), and a PhD candidate and two postdoc positions, all contributing to either the key enabling technologies on AI, datascience, robotics, and multimodal sensing or on Integrated Photonics, Nanotechnology and microfabrication, and Quantumtechnology (FONQT). John cooperates with the research group Photonics in the Key Enabling Technology lab of THUAS in several projects on integrated photonics, and quantumtechnology. The nanotech and microfabrication is part of the KET labs. The work on Nanotech varies from MRI proof sensors suitable for catheterisation on measuring c-reactive protein and blood pressure measurements with FBGs in veins, to development of layers of polymer brushes on microring resonators resulting in an ensamble sensor system for detecting volatile organic compounds in the NWA-ORC project Observed with Saxion.

Tjeerd Bollmann is a Senior Researcher and Lecturer at the Research Group Applied Nanotechnology at Saxion University of Applied Sciences in Enschede. With a Ph.D. in Nanotechnology from the University of Twente, he leads applied research in Saxion’s Quantum Lab, focusing on real-world quantum technologies such as NV centers, quantum secure communication, and photonic quantum processors in collaboration with QuiX Quantum. Tjeerd's work bridges education and innovation, involving students directly in experiments and prototype development. As co-developer of the master’s programme in Applied Quantum Technology, he integrates cutting-edge topics into teaching, including quantum computing and photonics across multiple educational tracks.

After studying Experimental Physics at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands, with a final internship in Cambridge UK, Inge Leermakers has studied exotic materials such as solid state oxides and semi-metals at the High Field Magnet Laboratory in Nijmegen as a PhD student. Inge started after her graduation as lecturer at Avans University of Applied Sciences, and Fontys. Since one year she is active at the Physics research group at Fontys Eindhoven. This research group is now focusing more towards photonics and quantum education, together with the TLC Eindhoven and several other partners.

Oded Raz is Scientific Program Manager at PhotonDelta where he oversees both the execution of the scientific programs and contributes with his technical expertise to the development of the R&amp;D projects carried out by PhotonDelta partners in the national growth fund project. In addition Oded Raz supports the human capital team in its contacts with universities and other educational institutions in the Netherlands developing integrated photonics programs. He is also a Professor in the Electrical Engineering department at the Eindhoven University of Technology where he has been teaching for the past 15 years in both the bachelor and master programs. His research interests include optical packaging, programmable photonics and quantum computers based on photonic solutions.
