Farm-Scale Linen Spinning

Farm-Scale Linen Spinning

Online event
Thursday, Apr 9 from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm CEST
Overview

Rosie and Nick (Fantasy Fibre Mill) are developing a spinning approach based on the vintage linen spinning machine at Linen Stories (FI)

Rosie and Nick (Fantasy Fibre Mill) are developing farm-scale lining spinning machinery that bears many similarities in approach and scale to the vintage linen spinning machine at Linen Stories (FI)

Join us for a unique behind-the-scenes webinar exploring linen spinning machinery in action — and what it can teach us about the future of small-scale fibre processing.

During this event Nick Evans (Fantasy Fibre Mill, Fibreshed Scotland) and Rosie Bristow will share about their project. They will discuss their upcoming trip to Finland and what they hope to learn from seeing the rare vintage linen spinning setup from Linen Stories (Leena Pesu, Fibershed Finland) that is remarkably similar in scale and construction to the machinery currently being developed at Fantasy Fibre Mill. The yarn produced on this equipment (NM5–6) is exactly the specification that many small-scale linen initiatives are aiming to achieve.

We will also explore how Fantasy Fibre Mill's new machinery as well as Linen Stories vintage machinery differs from large, industrial systems found at mills such as Safilin or Linificio. This makes it a rare and valuable example of linen spinning at a scale that is both practical and potentially replicable.

- How vintage linen spinning machinery works in practice
- Key similarities and differences between vintage and newly developed machines
- Lessons learned from observing linen spinning machinery in active use
- How affordable, easy-to-build machinery could be replicated by other Fibresheds

If you’re interested in linen, fibre processing, small-scale manufacturing, or resilient textile systems, this event offers a unique opportunity to learn from heritage technology, hands-on experimentation, and shared knowledge
