Fashion in Flux Showcase #1: Feeling Fashion

Nieuwe Instituut is het nationale museum voor architectuur, design en digitale cultuur. Nieuwe Instituut houdt zich bezig met de grote ontwikkelingen in de maatschappij, zoals de krapte op de woningmarkt, de energietransitie, de opkomst van kunstmatige intelligentie, mobiliteit of het gebruik van de publieke ruimte. Ontwerpers, waaronder architecten en digitale makers, kunnen aan die ontwikkelingen een belangrijke bijdrage leveren. Nieuwe Instituut toont het werk van ontwerpers, brengt mensen met elkaar in contact, verzamelt, ontwikkelt en deelt kennis.

A one-of-a-kind afternoon with music, performance, film and fashion.

Fashion in Flux and Nieuwe Instituut are inviting FASHIONCLASH artistic director Branko Popovic to curate an afternoon inspired by the vision and work of Ghanaian artist, researcher and maker Sel Kofiga. Popovic will showcase Sel Kofiga’s latest textile work, work by emerging fashion makers, as well as performances related to the works on show. Does sustainable fashion exist? <a href="https://selkofiga.com/about.php" title="https://selkofiga.com/about.php" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Sel Kofiga</a> doesn’t think so. He believes in sustainable relationships between materials, producers, wearers and the land: “Producing sustainable relationships relies mostly on understanding the implications of what we wear,” he says. “That’s what I’m interested in.” With a practice that spans performance, film, textile and photography, Kofiga focuses on the study of belief and ritual making, exploring colonised territories, material culture, communal relations and spatio-temporal consciousness. Alongside new textile work by Kofiga, the event will showcase creations by emerging fashion makers who are also interested in the relationships hidden within the fabric of clothing. To make their stories even more tangible, performers are invited to gently connect the audience with the garments without seeing or touching them.---Feeling Fashion is organized in collaboration with Designplatform Rotterdam and is supported by Gemeente Rotterdam and Nieuwe Instituut. The visit of Sel Kofiga is made possible by the International Visitors Programme of the Nieuwe Instituut with support from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
