Feminist Placemaking Academy Lisbon
For the 7th edition, we are headed to Lisbon, a city that offers a rich and layered context for the Feminist Placemaking Academy.
Lisbon brings forward the everyday realities that feminist urbanism seeks to address: walkability shaped by topography, strong reliance on public transport, intergenerational neighbourhoods, and the visible role of care in public space. The city’s rhythms, who moves, when, and how make inequalities and opportunities tangible, offering a living classroom for exploring gender-responsive urban design and governance.
A key point of departure for this edition is the iconic tram network, particularly around Praça Luís de Camões (22, 1200-243 Lisboa). This is more than a transit stop, it is a dense urban node where mobility, tourism, local life, and public space intersect. The tram itself becomes a lens into feminist placemaking: who has access, how space is shared, how safety and comfort are experienced, and how infrastructure supports (or limits) everyday care journeys.
The Feminist Placemaking Academy in Lisbon is designed as an intensive and collaborative learning experience focused on creating safer, more inclusive, and gender-responsive cities.
Throughout the programme, participants will explore the foundations of Feminist Placemaking 101, including key principles around safety, care infrastructure, mobility justice, participation, and the right to the city. The academy combines theory with practical application, offering tools, methods, and real-world case studies that can be applied across urban planning, policy, and design work.
The learning experience includes expert presentations, interactive workshops, collective discussions, and opportunities to exchange knowledge with practitioners, researchers, public officials, and community leaders working across urban development and social inclusion.
A key part of the academy is the inclusion of local voices and expertise. We invite speakers and contributors from the Lisbon context to bring place-based perspectives and lived experience into the conversation, helping connect global frameworks with local realities.
The programme runs over 6 hours, creating space for both deep learning and meaningful exchange. Participants will also have time for informal networking, including shared breaks and an end-of-day social gathering to strengthen collaboration and future partnerships.
Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate jointly issued by us and our partner organisations.
