EXPOSITIES OPENING:

1. CEVDET EREK: ꜴCCIDENT GROTESQUE

Het voormalige Amerikaanse ambassadegebouw van Marcel Breuer in West Den Haag wordt door Cevdet Erek een monumentale geluidsinstallatie, waarin bezoekers door 24 kamers worden geleid door een doorlopende beat. Geïnspireerd door een van de eerste synthesizers uit 1957, creëert hij een 12-toonsritme dat afwijkt van traditionele Westerse maatsoorten, waardoor visueel en auditief samensmelten tot een nieuwe ervaring van ruimte en geluid. Ꜵccident Grotesque is Ereks eerste solo-expositie in Nederland.

Opgeleid als architect en sound designer verkent Erek de wisselwerking tussen klank en architectuur. Het gebouw wordt letterlijk een levensgrote synthesizer en de installatie Fluctuations of Raw Techno Material (2024) laat zien hoe geluid en ruimte elkaar beïnvloeden. Met precisie en muzikale inventiviteit maakt hij het ritme dat onze wereld doordringt voelbaar. Zijn werk is internationaal te zien geweest, onder andere op de Biënnale van Venetië, DOCUMENTA en in musea zoals Hamburger Bahnhof en MACBA in Barcelona.

2. KATHY ACKER: Blood, Guts, and Anarchy

Deze expositie laat zien hoe de Amerikaanse avant-gardeschrijfster Kathy Acker (1947–1997) een radicale, feministische literaire taal ontwikkelde. Ze verkende thema’s als gender, identiteit, macht en verlangen, plunderde de literaire canon en zette het lichaam centraal in haar experimentele teksten vol seks, geweld en transgressie. De tentoonstelling belicht haar wortels in de New Yorkse underground, avant-garde performancekunst en cut-up-technieken, en is de eerste presentatie van haar werk in Nederland. Samensteller Leonor Jonker legt de nadruk op Ackers blijvende invloed op literatuur, feminisme en tegencultuur.

3. JAMES BALDWIN: This Morning, This Evening, So Soon – Turkey Saved My Life

Deze tentoonstelling onderzoekt de actualiteit van schrijver en activist James Baldwin. Zijn radicale eerlijkheid over ras, seksualiteit en identiteit inspireert hedendaagse kunstenaars om thema’s als ballingschap, queerness en nieuwe vormen van verzet te verkennen. Baldwin’s verblijf in Turkije (1961–1971) vormde een periode van rust, vrijheid en samenwerking die cruciaal was voor zijn literaire ontwikkeling. Werk van Diana Blok, Beldan Sezen, Sai Rodrigues, Isaiah Lopaz en curator Özkan Gölpınar reflecteert op identiteit als voortdurende onderhandeling, gevormd door ballingschap, verlangen en zelfdefinitie. Gölpınars monoloog over Baldwin en bijbehorende publicatie bieden een extra laag, terwijl een serie avonden met kunstenaars, schrijvers en denkers zijn nalatenschap koppelt aan actuele vragen over migratie, identiteit en representatie.

LIVE MUZIEK:

HARRY GÓRSKI-BROWN

De multi-instrumentalist Harry Górski-Brown uit Glasgow heeft de afgelopen jaren naam gemaakt met zijn innovatieve mix van elektro-akoestische en traditionele Schots-Gaelische muziek. In de recente heropleving van Britse en Europese traditionele/folkmuziek, die ook sterk aanwezig is binnen de experimentele muziekscene, is Górski-Brown een atypisch voorbeeld van hoe traditionele en folkmuziek nieuw leven ingeblazen kan worden via vernieuwende productiemethoden, zonder afbreuk te doen aan de betekenis of schoonheid van de muziek. Na een opleiding aan het Royal Conservatoire of Scotland verlegde hij zijn focus naar experimentele compositie. Hij is een begaafd violist en doedelzakspeler en gebruikt deze vaardigheden, samen met zijn stem, om elektronisch gemanipuleerde uitvoeringen van Gaelische muziek uit te voeren. Het resultaat zijn spookachtige, ontroerende en soms bizarre muzikale werelden.

MARIAM REZAEI

Mariam Rezaei is een veelvuldig geprezen componist, turntablist en performer en is actief binnen experimentele muziek, vrije improvisatie, experimentele clubmuziek en hiphop. Het Engelse muziektijdschrift The Wire omschreef haar als ‘een van de meest technisch begaafde en creatieve artiesten die de draaitafel als muziekinstrument gebruikt’. Rezaei werkt met een digitaal vinylsysteem, waarmee ze in real time een breed scala aan samples kan manipuleren via klassieke turntablist-technieken en haar eigen innovatieve methodes. Ze is een unieke stem binnen de hedendaagse muziek- en performancescene door haar compromisloze, gedurfde en gewaagde houding ten opzichte van de muziekindustrie en -gemeenschap. Haar concerten, solo of in groepsverband, zijn altijd sonisch provocerend, intimiderend en opwindend.

BLACK FONDU

BLACK FONDU is een enigmatische en energieke artiest afkomstig uit Accra, Ghana. Hij is gevestigd in Londen en heeft in korte tijd een stevige naam opgebouwd in de underground muziekscene. Zijn sound combineert glitchy noise-elementen met ongefilterde rapvocalen vol rauwe emotie. Dit komt tot uiting in uitgesproken dansmuziek, versterkt door explosieve sonische experimenten in ritme en melodie. De muziek is schurend, desoriënterend en zeer fysiek, waarbij hij zijn lichaam inzet als medium tijdens zijn hectische optredens. Naast muziek produceert BLACK FONDU, geheel in lijn met zijn punk DIY-ethos, even indringende videowerken, waarmee hij zijn chaotische geest verder onderstreept.

SIULI K.O.

Siuli K.O. is een Haagse dj met een sterke focus op vernieuwende bass, industrial funk en leftfield beats. Ze was een drijvende kracht achter de inmiddels legendarische en licht beruchte Acid Planet- en Industrial Funk-feesten, ontstaan in de kraakscene van Den Haag. Ook speelde ze een belangrijke rol binnen de experimentele labels Grijs en Nocturnal State, pijlers van de Haagse OG underground. Door haar zeldzame optredens zijn haar sets extra bijzonder, met energieke en explosieve dansmuziek recht uit de underground.

EXHIBITIONS OPENING:

CEVDET EREK: ꜴCCIDENT GROTESQUE

The former U.S. embassy building by Marcel Breuer is transformed by Cevdet Erek into a monumental sound installation, guiding visitors through 24 rooms with a continuous beat. Inspired by one of the first synthesizers from 1957, he creates a 12-tone rhythm that deviates from traditional Western time signatures, allowing visual and auditory elements to merge into a new experience of space and sound. Ꜵccident Grotesque is Erek’s first solo exhibition in the Netherlands.

Trained as an architect and sound designer, Erek explores the interplay between sound and architecture. The building itself becomes a life-sized synthesizer, and the installation ‘Fluctuations of Raw Techno Material’ (2024) demonstrates how sound and space influence one another. With precision and musical inventiveness, he makes the rhythm that permeates our world physically perceptible. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale, DOCUMENTA, and in museums such as Hamburger Bahnhof and MACBA in Barcelona.

KATHY ACKER: Blood, Guts, and Anarchy

This exhibition shows how American avant-garde writer Kathy Acker (1947–1997) developed a radical, feminist literary language. She explored themes such as gender, identity, power, and desire, plundered the literary canon, and placed the body at the center of her experimental texts full of sex, violence, and transgression. The exhibition highlights her roots in the New York underground, avant-garde performance art, and cut-up techniques, and is the first presentation of her work in the Netherlands. Curator Leonor Jonker emphasizes Acker’s enduring influence on literature, feminism, and counterculture.

This exhibition explores the relevance of writer and activist James Baldwin today. His radical honesty about race, sexuality, and identity inspires contemporary artists to examine themes such as exile, queerness, and new forms of resistance. Baldwin’s stay in Turkey (1961–1971) was a period of rest, freedom, and collaboration that was crucial to his literary development. Works by Diana Blok, Beldan Sezen, Sai Rodrigues, Isaiah Lopaz, and curator Özkan Gölpınar reflect on identity as an ongoing negotiation, shaped by exile, desire, and self-definition. Gölpınar’s monologue on Baldwin, along with an accompanying publication, provides an additional layer, while a series of evenings with artists, writers, and thinkers connects his legacy to current questions about migration, identity, and representation.

MUSIC PROGRAM:

HARRY GÓRSKI-BROWN

Glasgow-based multi-instrumentalist Harry Górski-Brown has been making a name for himself the last few years through his innovative blend of electroacoustic and traditional Scottish Gaelic music. In the recent resurgence of UK and European traditional / folk music, also prevalent in experimental music, Górski-Brown has been an atypical example of the possibilities of traditional and folk music being revitalized and expanded through innovative methods of production and performance, yet without hindering the significance or beauty of the music. Having studied violin at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland before gravitating towards more experimental composition, he is a skilled violinist and Bagpiper, employing his capabilities along with his voice to perform electronically manipulated renditions of Gaelic music. The result is haunting, moving, at times bizarre musical worlds.

MARIAM REZAEI

Mariam Rezaei is a multi-award-winning composer, turntablist and performer working across experimental music, free improvisation, experimental club music and hip-hop. Described by the English music magazine The Wire as “one of the most technically adept and creatively daring artists to use the turntable as a musical instrument,” Rezaei uses a digital vinyl system, allowing her to manipulate an expansive range of samples in real time using classic turntablist skills and her own innovative techniques. She is an extremely unique voice in contemporary music and performance due to both her instrument and use of it, but also her uncompromising, bold and fearless stance to the music industry and community. Her concerts, either solo or in groups are always sonically provocative, intimidating and exhilarating.

BLACK FONDU

Born in Accra, Ghana, BLACK FONDU is an enigmatic and energetic artist based in London, suddenly and surely making a name for himself in the underground music of his city. His sound combines glitchy noise elements with unapologetic rap vocals of raw emotion, catapulted into the realms of extreme dance by explosive sonic experimentation in rhythm and melody. The music is abrasively disorientating and very physical, with his body employed as a medium in his frantic performances. Besides his music and in line with his punk DIY ethos, BLACK FONDU produces equally abrasive video works for his music, demonstrating further his chaotic spirit.

SIULI K.O.

Den Haag's Siuli K.O. has always been on the lookout for cutting-edge bass, industrial funk and leftfield beats. She was once heart of the by now legendary and somewhat infamous Acid Planet and Industrial Funk parties taking place in the creative hub that was the squat scene of the Hague, as well as the experimental labels Grijs and Nocturnal State within Den Haag’s OG underground. Her appearances as a DJ are rare, and therefore not to be missed, with explosive dance music at the core of what she does.
