Documenting Complexity - In solidarity with…

Hoe documentairemakers zich verhouden tot de wereld die ze documenteren is volop in beweging - dankzij het gebruik van nieuwe technologieën, veranderende sociale verhoudingen, experimentele manieren van vertellen en multidisciplinaire praktijken. Daarbij raakt journalistiek innig verweven met kunst, design en activisme. Het tweejarig onderzoekstraject Documenting Complexity zoomt in op de vele manieren waarop documentairemakers structureel onrecht zichtbaar maken en laten zien hoe de wereld zich plooit en ontplooit, versluiert en ontbloot, geeft en neemt.

Op donderdag 2 september brengt MU vanaf 20.00 uur filmmakers en kunstenaars bij elkaar die in hun werk alternatieve vormen van verzet tegen de gevestigde orde voorstellen. Daarbij staan vragen rond kolonialisme, bezetting en verbondenheid centraal. Claude Nassar en Astrid Feringa bespreken hun meest recente projecten en Sunjo Lee, Seokyung Kim en Timm Donke introduceren Tree-001 - een videostream over menselijke/niet-menselijke ontmoetingen.

How documentary makers relate to the world they document is changing - due to the use of new technologies, changing social relations, experimental ways of storytelling and multidisciplinary practices. Journalism becomes intimately entangled with art, design and activism. The two years running research trajectory Documenting Complexity zooms in on the myriad ways in which documentary makers reveal structural injustice by showing how the world folds and unfolds, veils and lays bare, gives and takes.

On 2 September starting at 8 pm, MU brings together filmmakers and artists whose work proposes alternative imaginaries for resistance. Centering around questions of coloniality, belonging and occupation, Claude Nassar and Astrid Feringa will discuss their most recent artistic research projects. Sunjoo Lee, Seokyung Kim and Timm Donke will introduce Tree-001 – a video stream about human/nonhuman encounters.

Documenting Complexity is an NWO funded research collective in which MU collaborates with University of Groningen, Hogeschool Utrecht (JournalismLab), Beeld & Geluid, VersPers en WORM.
