Incorporating Ethical Considerations in the Autonomous & Intelligent Systems (A/IS) – Policy & Industry Requirements in the Algorithmic Age

Responsible InnovationThe Delft Design for Values (DDFV) Institute works on addressing the grand challenges of the 21st century by means of responsible innovation. This requires pro-actively addressing relevant moral and social values already in the design phase of new technologies, services, spaces, businesses, and institutions.Design for ValuesThere are several reasons for adopting the DDFV approach: (1) the avoidance of technology rejection due to a mismatch with the values of users or society, (2) the improvement of technologies/design by embodying these values, and (3) the generation or stimulation of values in users through design.Portal and BoosterDDFV is the portal and booster of Design for Values research and education at Delft University of Technology. It aims at intensifying internal and external collaborations in the area and making visible what our university has to offer as a major partner in the debate on / implementation of design for values.

An interactive discussion, jointly organized by IEEE-SA & DDFV 
Autonomous and Intelligent Systems, also called Artificial Intelligence (AI), are rapidly spreading beyond transportation, into health, social care, manufacturing, enterprise productivity and advanced cyber-defense, to name a few application areas. They hold great promise to benefit society as well as business, but they also bring forth social, legal and ethical challenges, which include issues of major systemic risk, diminishing trust, privacy challenges and issues of data transparency, ownership and agency. This event will:

<LI>Promote awareness of ethical considerations around A/IS technologies.</LI>
<LI>Showcase the importance to and value of industry engagement in the development of standards</LI>
<LI>Illustrate how voluntary standards can have relevance to industry, citizens, and the policy community, and be leverage for the public good</LI>
</UL>
