Reduce heat risks and increase liveability for inhabitants in neighbourhoods in North-West Europe.

The increasing temperature in cities due to global warming creates hotter areas within cities. This poses risks for people living there. These higher temperatures have a negative impact on public health, productivity, wellbeing, air and water quality and other urban systems. We call these impacts ‘Heat Stress’.Different neighbourhoods face varying levels of heat stress. The need for tailormade spatial heat stress adaptation is clear. How do we make our neighbourhoods heat resilient? What is the existing and desired heat situation and what are effective heat adaption measures with co-benefits for other urban needs (e.g. liveability, biodiversity, environmental quality …). The Interreg North West Europe Cool Neighbourhoods project, in association with the Cool Cities and Green Dense projects, invites you to an inspiring afternoon full of insights and solutions for tackling heat stress.This event is also accessible to stakeholders, students, communication departments and other interested parties. It's free of charge and translation into one or more languages will be provided.

Introduction to the Cool Neighbourhoods project and partners

Partner in the Interreg NWE Green Dense project.

Highlighting the significance of Urban Ecosystem-based planning and design as a pivotal approach in enhancing quality of life and environmental sustainability within cities of various sizes. By strategically intervening at both local and systemic levels through the implementation of urban ecosystem restoration strategies and design methodologies, it is possible to catalyse the transformation of existing urban centres into vibrant eco-cities.


 Urban Ecology Design as a Basis for City Planning

Presentation of the Interreg North Sea Region Cool Cities project 

Well-known from her book and website Urban Green-blue grids for resilient cities, Hiltrud Pötz has extensive experience in making neighbourhoods healthier and climate resilient by taking green-blue measures. When designing those, the limited space must be carefully used and this requires close cooperation with the inhabitants of those neighbourhoods, by engaging them and the related city departments in the design process through co-creation.

Foundation of the cost-benefit model was laid in the Interreg-2seas Nature Smart Cities project and will be refined during Cool Neighbourhoods. This tool integrates economic perspectives with ecological considerations to evaluate the monetary and non-monetary value of green infrastructure elements. By quantifying the ecosystem services provided by green infrastructure, the co-created tool aids local authorities to straightforwardly assess the impact of green infrastructure in early green infrastructure project stages. Since publication, the tool has been downloaded over 300 times by organisations all over the world, and has been published in the Journal of Urban Forestry & Urban Greening. 

A Cost Benefit Model for Green Infrastructure 

How can we plan and design effective cooling projects that mitigate heat and enhance the well-being of our communities and environments? And how can we serve the necessary funding to bring these transformative projects to life? 

The Cool Neighbourhoods project uses Symbiosis in Development (SiD), a dynamic framework for integrated sustainable development rooted in systems and design thinking. The presentation will provide an insightful overview of SiD, showcasing inspiring case studies highlighting innovative design and financing approaches. Let’s explore how thoughtful planning and strategic investments can create a cooler, more vibrant neighbourhoods for everyone!
