Event description

Description

EMBED is a reference model for developing and implementing blended education. The EMBED partner experts from Delft University of Technology, KU Leuven, University of Edinburgh, Dublin City University, Aarhus University and TAMK will share with you the development and use of the maturity model for blended education. This model embraces all levels of an institution: the design of blended courses, organisational aspects such as staff support, training and institutional leadership, next to policy development and strategies which enable an institution to innovate continuously its blended education, teaching and learning.

PROGRAMME

Part one: 14.00 - 15.45

  • Opening by George Ubachs (Managing Director EADTU, coordinator EMBED)

  • Framing Blended learning, teaching, and education, Stephan Poelmans, KU Leuven
Despite the fact that blended learning, teaching and education have been labelled as ‘the new normal’ and are being conceived by some as a ‘foregone conclusion’, they are still ambiguously defined and discussed in the literature. Conceptual and operational problems induce important challenges to scholars and practitioners in higher education. In this presentation, we will elaborate on operational definitions and dimensions of blended learning, teaching, and education, and present empirical evidence of working practices and policies in the partner institutions of the EMBED project.

  • Blended or post-digital? The near future of digital education, Sian Bayne, University of Edinburgh
This short talk will discuss aspects of the recent strategic project at the University of Edinburgh to develop a vision for Near Future Teaching (https://www.nearfutureteaching.ed.ac.uk/). This project used co-design methods and futures thinking to work across the university, defining a set of values and aims broadly shared by its students and staff. The talk will focus specifically on the aim to build a ‘post-digital’ future in which a new way of understanding ‘blended’ is explored in order to design teaching which navigates the online and the on-campus in new ways.

  • Developing the Maturity Model for Blended Education, Willem van Valkenburg; TU Delft
In this presentation, we will explain the process of the development of the maturity model via research of existing maturity models, experience from case studies and a Delphi study to validate the model. Next, we will explain the model with all dimensions and indicators for the micro (within a course or programme) and meso (within school or institute) level.

15.45- 16.00 Break

Part two: 16.00 - 17.30

  • Exchanging experiences with the EMBED Maturity Model, Willem van Valkenburg, TU Delft
In this session, we focus on how to use the model and what is the best way to use it within your institute. Via a SWOT analysis, we will focus on the strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the Maturity Model for blended education.

  • MOOC Maturity Model for Blended Education, Yi-Shan Tsai, University of Edinburgh
In this session, we introduce a MOOC developed based on the outputs of the EMBED project and how it can be used for continuous professional development in the context of blended education. We will also invite the audience to join an interactive session to build the content of the MOOC.

  • Q&A plenary session

After the EMBED event, the ALT Annual Conference 2019 will take place on 3-5 September.
