Mosques as Sanctuaries of Resilience: Faith-Based Humanitarianism on the Frontlines of Climate Displacement

When climate disasters strike—whether it is flash floods in Pakistan, droughts in the Horn of Africa, or rising sea levels in the MENA region—mosques are organically used as immediate evacuation centers. By combining Greenpeace MENA’s structural "Green Mosque" framework with Islamic Help’s frontline humanitarian expertise and Global One’s focus on gender-inclusive livelihoods, this event explores how houses of worship can be systematically transformed into climate-resilient, solar-powered humanitarian hubs that provide clean energy, filtered water, and long-term green livelihoods for climate-displaced populations.<h3>How the Allies Fit Together</h3><ul><li>Islamic Help (The Frontline Reality): Shares real-world data and case studies (such as their pioneering Children’s Eco-Village in Tanzania) on how climate-induced displacement operates on the ground. They will speak on the immediate logistical needs of climate refugees and how religious infrastructure serves as the first line of defense. </li><li>Greenpeace MENA (The Structural Transition): Speaker: Nouhad Awwad- Ummah For Earth campaigner and Global Outreach coordinator </li><li>Connects the local to the global by demanding systemic climate justice. They will showcase the technical side of the Ummah for Earth "Green Mosque" initiative—proving how equipping these regional sanctuaries with solar power and sustainable microgrids keeps vital lifelines (communication, cooling, medical storage) running independently during a grid collapse or extreme weather event. </li><li>Global One (The Livelihood &amp; Gender Nexus): Global One (The Livelihood &amp; Gender Nexus): Speaker: Zahra Ahmad, Director of Philanthropy, Global One 2015</li><li><ul><li>Focuses on what happens after the immediate crisis — rebuilding lives with dignity, sustainability, and economic independence at the centre. Global One will detail how the Green Mosque can serve as a long-term community hub, hosting post-displacement training and livelihood programmes with a particular focus on women. Drawing on their on-the-ground experience running women's livelihood cooperatives across Kenya, Nigeria, and Bangladesh, they will showcase how faith-aligned, community-led models can be replicated in climate-vulnerable regions worldwide.</li><li>Their presentation will highlight the Islamic Farming Toolkit as a faith-rooted approach to climate-smart agriculture, integrating sustainable land stewardship with practical skills in solar-powered food systems, including the development of solar-powered cold storage units in partnership with technical partners to reduce post-harvest loss for displaced farming communities. </li><li>Complementing this, Global One will present their work on solar-powered housing solutions, demonstrating how clean energy access forms the foundation of long-term resilience for displaced families.</li><li>Beyond livelihoods, Global One will address the often-overlooked intersection of climate displacement and women's health through their WASH programming, which includes the distribution and production of reusable menstrual hygiene pads as an eco-friendly, dignified solution for women in crisis settings. Rounding out their contribution, Global One will speak to their entrepreneurship training programmes for women, equipping climate-displaced individuals with the skills and networks to build sustainable economic independence through green cooperatives and community enterprises. </li></ul></li><li>Islamic Relief UK: Shazia Arshad, Head of Communications and Creative Content (tbc)</li><li><ul><li>Can speak on Greening My Mosque toolkit developed for masjids in the UK, and can speak on other initiatives mobilising Muslim communities eg Muslim Climate Action Week. </li><li>We can also share learning from our international work—such as climate-adaptive farming, drought‑resistant crops, and solarising buildings—and explore how these approaches can be adapted locally. This includes supporting mosques and other places of worship to become more resilient, sustainable, and positioned as first responders in times of climate-related crisis.</li></ul></li></ul>

The Mosque as an Eco-Sanctuary (The "Why" and "How"): How to structurally retrofit mosques in vulnerable zones with renewable energy and circular water systems (Wudu water recycling for local irrigation) so they can function as off-grid crisis centers.
Addressing Loss & Damage Through Faith Networks: Shifting the global climate narrative from "reactive aid" to "proactive resilience." Discussing how international Loss and Damage funds can be channeled directly to grassroots, faith-based organizations to upgrade community infrastructure before disasters hit.
From Displaced to Stewards (Khilafah): Showcasing how green skills training inside these eco-hubs helps displaced families rebuild their lives through sustainable agriculture and green technology jobs.
