About this event

Erik Kwakkel, “'To those who wish to write fancy letters, come to me’: Advertisement sheets in late medieval book culture.”

Professional scribes in the Middle Ages produced advertisement sheets with which they presented themselves to potential clients. In this lecture Erik Kwakkel will show known and new examples of such advertisement sheets and interpret their importance for our understanding of the culture of writing in the later Middle Ages.

The lecture will take place in the Vossius room, on the top floor of Leiden University Library. The lecture is followed by a pop-up exhibition in the Heinsius room, where relevant material from Leiden University’s manuscript collection will be on display.
