This event is part of the exhibition The Cost of Alliance and recounts the history of NATO in Europe. With his lecture History Has No Lessons for Us Vladislav Shapovalov talks about his research into a traveling exhibition that NATO presented in a circus tent on public squares across Europe in the 1950s. Kristina Benjocki and Stijn Verhoeff's film While the Pile of Rubble Grows Towards the Sky traces the long history of NATO’s mysterious war headquarters in Maastricht, carved out of miles of limestone mines. In the discussion following the lecture and screening, we will reflect on the significance of NATO's presence in Europe and its use of exhibitions as a medium.

Dit programma maakt deel uit van de tentoonstelling The Cost of Alliance bij Stroom Den Haag en vertelt de geschiedenis van de NAVO in Europa. Vladislav Shapovalov doet onderzoek naar de reizende tentoonstelling die de NAVO in de jaren ’50 presenteerde in een circustent op openbare pleinen door heel Europa, en vertelt daarover in zijn lezing History Has No Lessons for Us. De film While the Pile of Rubble Grows Towards the Sky van Kristina Benjocki en Stijn Verhoeff volgt de lange geschiedenis van het mysterieuze oorlogshoofdkwartier van de NAVO in Maastricht, uitgehouwen in kilometers aan mergelgrotten. Opvolgend gaan de kunstenaars in gesprek over de betekenis van de aanwezigheid van de NAVO in Europa en NAVO’s gebruik van tentoonstellingen als medium.
