IntroductionTo disclose or not to disclose the use of AI to news readers?This is one of the most pressing questions news organisations are facing at the moment when working with (generative) AI tools. AI is here to stay – also in journalism. News organisations are experimenting with or have already implemented generative AI technologies in their news production processes and are creating internal guidelines as we speak. Some organisations inform their readers about the fact that they are using AI, and some don’t. Is this ethical? What do readers want? And what should useful disclosures even look like? This event will shine a light on this timely discussion from three different perspectives: <ol><li>Ethical &amp; legal aspects;</li><li>Communication science;</li><li>UX design and HTI insights.</li></ol> Our researchers will share the latest empirical insights and ethical/legal considerations around AI disclosures in the news. Join us for this interactive online panel! PanelistsSophie Morosoli Sophie Morosoli is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at the AI, Media and Democracy Lab. Her interest in AI and other emerging technologies deepened during her PhD, which focused on the individual dissemination of online misinformation. Within the Lab, she is exploring individuals ‘attitudes towards AI (in journalism) with a special focus on trust, risk perceptions, and authenticity. Abdallah El Ali Abdallah El Ali is a Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) researcher with a background in Cognitive Science. He is currently a research scientist at Centrum Wiskunde &amp; Informatica (CWI) within the Distributed &amp; Interactive Systems (DIS) group, and an Assistant Professor (part-time) at Utrecht University within the Multimedia group. He is also affiliated with the AI, Media, and Democracy Lab, where he leads Human-AI Interaction research focusing on AI transparency in media. Laurens NaudtsLaurens Naudts is a postdoctoral researcher at the AI, Media and Democracy Lab and Insitute for Information Law. In his research, Laurens explores the political philosophy, ethics and regulation of artificial intelligence and automation. In his current work, Laurens investigates the structural, social and relational dynamics that constitute a digitally mediated society, including positions of power and privilege and acts and structures of oppression and domination. Hannes Cools Hannes Cools is Assistant Professor 'Human Factor in New Technologies' at the University of Amsterdam and a communication scholar at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR), as well as the AI, Media and Democracy Lab of the University of Amsterdam. His research include responsible (generative) AI and news, computational journalism, and newsroom innovation. ModeratorTeresa WeikmannTeresa is a postdoctoral researcher at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research, primarily working on the BENEDMO project, a Flemish-Dutch collaboration tackling disinformation. In this project, she studies the impact of emerging forms of disinformation, including AI-generated visuals, and is involved in policy analysis concerning social media platforms’ compliance with the Code of Practice on Disinformation. DiscussantKatharina Schell Katharina Schell is Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Austrian news agency APA and represents the editorial team in the company's "Trusted AI" unit. This past winter, Katharina used a three-month fellowship at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism to pull together a practical framework and accompanying tools that help publishers, editorial teams and journalists make well-informed and plainly explainable decisions on whether, when and how to disclose the use of AI in their journalistic products. About the AI, Media &amp; Democracy LabWe are an Ethical, Legal, and Societal laboratory focused on the implications of AI for Media and Democracy, founded by the Netherlands Research Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science, the Amsterdam University of Applied Science, and the University of Amsterdam.
