Om zeker te zijn van een plaats in de VR-hoofdstukken van de NERD_FUNK tentoonstelling kun je hier een tijdslot reserveren.

Hoe het werkt

◦ De NERD_FUNK tentoonstelling bestaat uit 3 VR hoofdstukken en 2 twee audiovisuele en ruimtelijke hoofdstukken
◦ Je kunt de VR-hoofdstukken met maximaal 5 bezoekers tegelijk ervaren. Wil je NERD_FUNK met meer dan 5 personen bezoeken? Neem dan contact op met balie@mu.nl

◦ Een van onze medewerkers leidt jullie per keer door een van de drie verschillende VR-hoofdstukken van de tentoonstelling. Maak je geen zorgen, aan het eind heb je alle vijf de NERD_FUNK hoofdstukken gezien!

◦ Dit is een reservering voor een vast tijdslot. Je koopt bij aankomst jouw toegangskaartje bij de balie.

NERD_FUNK is een caleidoscopische verkenning van de vergaande invloed van sociale media op onze visuele en digitale cultuur. Verdeeld in vijf immersieve hoofdstukken, drie in VR en twee audiovisueel en ruimtelijk, presenteren kunstenaars Ali Eslami en Mamali Shafahi, bijgestaan door Pensive Vivifier, vanaf 4 april in MU Hybrid Art House het uitgebreide onderzoek waar ze zeven jaar aan werkten.

Via een virtuele entiteit die ze creëerden, genaamd nerd_funk, verzamelden Eslami en Shafahi de Instagram Stories van meer dan 1.000 mensen uit 2018. Al die toegewijde maar ook kritische makers liepen voorop in het creatieve gebruik van het platform. Ze vulden hun Instagram feeds met een oneindige stroom beelden waaruit een nieuwe esthetiek ontstond. Dit archief werd de basis voor de vijf NERD_FUNK verhaallijnen, die elk een aspect van de eigenzinnige Instagramcultuur weerspiegelen.

Maar als er iets snel verandert, dan is het wel de internetcultuur, dat weten de makers van NERD_FUNK maar al te goed. Om deze ontwikkelingen bij te houden vroegen ze Marijn Bril, curator gespecialiseerd in digitale cultuur, een portal te maken die leest als een soort social media bibliotheek. Die portal - vol met boeken, beelden, sites en vijf werken van jonge makers die op hun beurt ook weer losjes verwijzen naar de vijf verhaallijnen - vormt de in-/uitgang naar de werelden die NERD_FUNK heten.

Bereid je dus voor op een meeslepende trip die je zowel terugwerpt in de grenzeloze hybriditeit van het post-digitale, pre-covidale tijdperk als je voortstuwt in het chaotische post-alles-nu. Een staat van zijn waarin de grenzen tussen publiek en privé volledig zijn verschoven en nieuwe combinaties van narcisme en voyeurisme hoogtij vieren.

Maar bovenal een dappere poging van de kunstenaars om artistieke waarde toe te kennen aan de nutteloze overbelasting die zo kenmerkend is voor socials. Een overbelasting waar we allemaal aan bijdragen en ons volledig in verliezen.

NERD_FUNK a seven year odyssey opent op vrijdag 4 april en is te zien tot 22 juni.

How does it work

NERD_FUNK is a kaleidoscopic exploration of the far-reaching influence of social media on our visual and digital culture. Divided into five immersive chapters, three in VR and two audiovisual and spatial, artists Ali Eslami and Mamali Shafahi, assisted by Pensive Vivifier, present the extensive research they worked on for seven years, from April 4 at MU Hybrid Art House.

Through a virtual entity they created, which they called nerd_funk, Eslami and Shafahi collected the Instagram Stories of more than 1,000 people from 2018. All those dedicated but also critical creators were at the forefront of creative use of the platform. They filled their Instagram feeds with an unending stream of images through which a new aesthetic emerged. This archive became the basis for the five NERD_FUNK storylines, each reflecting an aspect of the quirky Instagram culture.

But if anything is changing fast, it is internet culture, that's what the makers of NERD_FUNK are well aware of. To keep up with these developments, they asked Marijn Bril, curator specialized in digital culture, to create a portal that reads like a kind of social media library. That portal - full of books, images, sites and five works by young makers that in turn also loosely refer to the five storylines - forms the entrance/exit to the worlds called NERD_FUNK.

So get ready for an immersive trip that both throws you back into the boundless hybridity of the post-digital, pre-covid era and propels you into the chaotic post-all now. A state of being in which the lines between public and private are completely shifted and new combinations of narcissism and voyeurism reign supreme.

But above all, a brave attempt by the artists to assign artistic value to the useless overload so characteristic of socials. An overload we all contribute to and completely lose ourselves in.
