Protecting North European Short Tailed Sheep; from Viking Heritage to Wool-Based Value

North European Short-Tailed sheep are living relics of the Viking Age. Spanning roughly 35 ancient breeds, from the Icelandic and Shetland to the Faroese and Soay, these animals have grazed northern landscapes for over a thousand years, shaping the textile traditions, cultural identities, and rural economies of entire regions.Today, many of these breeds face an uncertain future. Small populations, geographic isolation, and limited economic viability for the farmers who keep them put this irreplaceable genetic and cultural heritage at risk.This event introduces a new initiative that takes a different approach to conservation: <ul><li>The history and importance of North European Short Tailed Sheep breeds</li><li>How wool-based value chains can help preserve regional cultural heritage and identity</li><li>Practical approaches to turning heritage wool into value-added products – search for authenticity and provenance</li></ul><h4>Who should attend?</h4>This event is for farmers and shepherds, textile producers and designers, heritage and conservation organisations, artisan makers and slow fashion advocates, and anyone who believes that ancient breeds and modern value creation can — and must — work together.=&gt; Join us to learn about a new initiative to conserve North European Short Tailed Sheep – a group of roughly 35 ancient breeds dating back to the Viking Age – by unlocking the cultural and economic value of their wool.
