"of Sound and Song" is a piano concert series presented by The Merchant House, a contemporary art gallery, and Tomoko Mukaiyama in a historical canal house in Amsterdam. As we are moving away from the winter's darkness, we invite you to celebrate the onset of spring with us, in an intimate living room-style concert. This fifth edition will be a solo performance by Tomoko Mukaiyama. It is the first time she will be playing John Cage’s Four Walls (1944), an intriguing piece originally written for a dance performance. It is followed by Consolation (1989), a meditative and hypnotic piece of the unusual Russian composer Alexander Raskatov. To honour and observe the powerful changes in light and nature, this performance will have a sense of ritual, a prayer for the deities of springtime. Different disciplines, their forms and styles, are used and traversed on equal footing. Recurring themes in her work are gender inequality, the female body and the relationship with our natural environment, often elaborated from the possibilities and frictions of a local situation.
