Open Paviljoen: Koffie en Koekoe II

In 2018 presenteerde West Den Haag de tentoonstelling All Power to the People!, over de erfenis van de Black Panther-beweging. Deze expositie riep vragen op over representatie, de invloed van historische machtsstructuren op het heden, en over de manier waarop thema’s als vrijheid en verzet worden benaderd binnen (veelal witte) culturele instellingen. Naar aanleiding van deze discussie organiseren wij deze zomer drie talkshows, waarin we actuele en fundamentele kwesties gezamenlijk onder de loep nemen.

Onder leiding van Jane Biekman en Marie-José Sondeijker gaan we in gesprek over thema’s als vrijheid, de verhouding tussen Nederland en Suriname, geloof en katholicisme, conformisme en verzet, en de vraag hoe we kritisch en bewust naar onze samenleving kunnen blijven kijken. Samen met speciale gasten reflecteren we ook op de rol van taal, met bijzondere aandacht voor het Sranantongo als drager van identiteit, geschiedenis en cultuur.

Jane Biekman kwam vijftig jaar geleden vanuit Suriname naar Nederland. Als betrokken en kritisch burger geeft zij stem aan de Surinaamse ervaring en aan de zoektocht naar vrijheid, identiteit en verbondenheid.

Marie-José Sondeijker groeide op in het zuiden van Nederland. Zij is directeur van West Den Haag, een kunstinstelling die ook ruimte biedt aan maatschappelijke en filosofische dialoog.

Tijdens de bijeenkomsten serveren wij gratis koffie en koekoe (Surinaamse cake). U bent van harte welkom om te luisteren, vragen te stellen en bij te dragen aan het gesprek.

In 2018, West Den Haag presented the exhibition All Power to the People!, which explored the legacy of the Black Panther movement. The exhibition sparked questions about representation, the impact of historical power structures on the present, and how themes such as freedom and resistance are addressed within (often white) cultural institutions. In response to this discussion, we are hosting three talk shows this summer to collectively examine current and fundamental societal issues.

Led by Jane Biekman and Marie-José Sondeijker, we will engage in conversations on topics such as freedom, the relationship between the Netherlands and Suriname, faith and Catholicism, conformity and resistance, and how we can continue to view our society with critical awareness. Together with special guests, we will also reflect on the role of language, with particular attention to Sranantongo as a carrier of identity, history, and culture.

Jane Biekman moved from Suriname to the Netherlands fifty years ago. As an engaged and critical citizen, she gives voice to the Surinamese experience and the ongoing search for freedom, identity, and connection.

Marie-José Sondeijker grew up in the south of the Netherlands. She is the director of West Den Haag, a contemporary art institution that also creates space for social and philosophical dialogue.
