Open Paviljoen: The Silent Book Club I

Deze ‘stille leesclub’ biedt de mogelijkheid om samen zelfstandig te lezen. De leesclub vindt buiten plaats, waardoor alledaagse omgevingsgeluiden onderdeel worden van de leeservaring. Geïnspireerd door John Cage’s bewering dat stilte niet bestaat, en Pierre Schaeffer’s idee dat de geluiden van het dagelijks leven ook muzikaal kunnen zijn, nodigt The Silent Book Club je uit voor een unieke lees-luisterervaring tijdens de zomermiddagen bij het Open Paviljoen op het Lange Voorhout. Neem het boek mee waar je momenteel in verdiept bent – er is geen verplichte leesopdracht of thema.

Er is ruimte voor stille reflectie, maar toch in het gezelschap van anderen. Na de leessessie is er een open groepsdiscussie voor iedereen die gedachten, reflecties of simpelweg verbinding wil delen. Deelname aan het gesprek is echter geheel optioneel – je bent net zo welkom om van de stilte te genieten en te vertrekken wanneer je wilt.

De Silent Book Club wordt georganiseerd door Kristina Petković, een kunsthistorica die momenteel de masteropleiding Arts and Culture volgt met een specialisatie in Museumstudies en stage loopt bij West Den Haag. Met haar eerdere onderzoek richtte ze zich op de muzikaliteit van stilte en omgevingsgeluid.

This silent book club is meant to be a space for self-paced reading. It will take place outdoors, allowing everyday environmental sounds to become part of the reading experience. Inspired by John Cage’s assertion that silence does not exist and Pierre Schaeffer’s idea that the sounds of daily life can also be musical, the book club invites you to engage in a reading–listening experience during summer afternoons in The Hague. Bring along whatever book you're currently immersed in – there's no assigned reading or required theme.

This is a space for quiet reflection and presence, shared in the company of others. After the reading session, there will be an open group discussion for anyone who feels like sharing thoughts, reflections, or simply connecting. However, participation in the conversation is entirely optional – you're just as welcome to enjoy the silence and leave when you wish.

Organized by Kristina Petković, an art historian currently pursuing a Master's in Arts and Culture with a specialization in Museum Studies and interning at West The Hague. Her previous research explores the musicality of silence and environmental noise.
