Opening van het Open Paviljoen

Den Haag is geen eenvormige stad, maar een levendige, meertalige gemeenschap vol verhalen. Om die rijkdom te vieren opent West deze zomer het Open Paviljoen. We nodigen je van harte uit voor de feestelijke start!

OPENINGSPROGRAMMA - MARCEL PINAS - AFAKA KONDEE

16:00 UUR - Opening Open Paviljoen 2025 op het Lange Voorhout (vlakbij Hotel de Indes)

• Optreden André Mosis (percussionist, gespecialiseerd in traditionele Marronmuziek uit Suriname)
• Toespraak door Kathleen Ferrier (bestuursvoorzitter van de Stichting Johan Ferrier Fonds)
• Publiek gesprek: Marcel Pinas, Jessy Rahman, André Mosis o.l.v. Fresco Sam-Sin
  

De site-specific installatie 'Afaka Kondee' is ontworpen door de Surinaamse kunstenaar Marcel Pinas en bestaat uit een vloer en een projectruimte. Het werk maakt deel uit van een serie rond het Afaka-schrift, waarin deze letter tekens gecombineerd zijn met een traditioneel tembe-motief. Samen vormen ze een symbolische toegangspoort tot de trotse, spirituele en culturele wereld van de Marrongemeenschap. In dit paviljoen biedt West drie maanden lang een toegankelijk, cultureel programma – met goede koffie, drankjes sandwiches en pastries door BRO.

Dit jaar ligt bij West de focus op Suriname, een land dat onlosmakelijk verbonden is met het heden en verleden van Nederland. Het programma stimuleert culturele uitwisseling en artistieke expressie op uiteenlopende manieren: via workshops, muziek, debat, lezingen en dialoog. Samen met andere culturele partners wordt dit dé levendige ontmoetingsplek van deze zomer, vóór en dóór de stad. Maar het Open Paviljoen is meer dan een podium: het is een denkruimte waar kunst kan bijdragen aan een inclusieve en leefbare wereld. Met bijdragen van uiteenlopende makers en bewoners is er ruimte voor zowel professionele als persoonlijke verhalen.

The Hague is not a uniform city, but a vibrant, multilingual community full of stories. To celebrate that richness, West is opening the Open Paviljoen this summer. You are warmly invited to the festive launch!

WEST x BRO PRESENT: OPENING PROGRAMME

15:30 hrs – Visit to the open-air exhibitions on Lange Voorhout

16:00 hrs – Opening of the Open Pavilion 2025 on Lange Voorhout
Performance by André Mosis (percussionist specializing in traditional Maroon music from Suriname)

• Speech by Kathleen Ferrier (Chair of the Johan Ferrier Fund Foundation)
• Public conversation with Marcel Pinas, Jessy Rahman, and André Mosis, moderated by Fresco Sam-Sin
  

The site-specific installation Afaka Kondee was designed by Surinamese artist Marcel Pinas and consists of a floor piece and a project space. The work is part of a series centered on the Afaka script, in which these letter symbols are combined with a traditional tembe motif. Together, they form a symbolic gateway to the proud, spiritual, and cultural world of the Maroon community.

At this pavilion, West will present an accessible cultural program for three months – with good coffee, drinks, sandwiches, and pastries by BRO.

This year, West is focusing on Suriname – a country inextricably linked with the present and past of the Netherlands. The program encourages cultural exchange and artistic expression in various forms: through workshops, music, debate, lectures, and dialogue. Together with other cultural partners, this will be the vibrant meeting place of the summer – for and by the city.

But the Open Paviljoen is more than a stage: it is a space for reflection, where art can contribute to a more inclusive and livable world. With contributions from diverse makers and residents, there is room for both professional and personal stories.
