Join us on Wednesday, December 11, for the screening of documentary Free Space. The evening will be moderated by Mathieu Wijdeven.

Free Space ScreeningRecently, there has been significant debate surrounding identity, diversity, and inclusion in the arts and culture sector. These discussions are often intense and polarized. Media outlets and cultural institutions are grappling with the challenge of aligning their organizations, education, collections, and staff with new standards of diversity and inclusion—an essential effort to catch up.However, at times, this also leads to the emergence of new dogmas. This happens when art is reduced to the ideology it is perceived to represent or when it is judged based on the behavior and identity of its creator, with identity narrowly defined by race or gender. Such perspectives can result in far-reaching consequences, dictating what artists can or cannot create.Panel TalkAfter the screening of the film, a thought-provoking discussion will be facilitated by Critical Mass. This conversation will focus on the diverse perspectives presented in the film, encouraging reflection and providing insights into these viewpoints. What position do you take, and how do you relate to the positions of others? Die discussie is soms behoorlijk fel en gepolariseerd. Media en kunstinstellingen worstelen om hun organisatie, hun onderwijs, hun collectie, hun personeel aan te passen aan nieuwe normen van diversiteit en inclusie. Een noodzakelijke inhaalslag.Soms echter is ook sprake van nieuwe dogma’s. Als kunst wordt gereduceerd tot de ideologie die eruit zou spreken. Als kunst wordt getoetst aan het gedrag en de identiteit van de maker en die identiteit wordt gereduceerd tot kleur of gender. Als hier vergaande consequenties aan worden verbonden met betrekking tot wat makers wel / niet mogen maken.Panel gesprekNa de vertoning van de film vindt er een verdiepend nagesprek plaats verzorgd door Critical Mass. Hierin staan de diverse perspectieven die in de film aan bod komen centraal. Dit gesprek zorgt voor reflectie en inzichten in de diverse perspectieven. Welke positie neem je zelf aan en hoe verhoud je je ten opzichte van de positie van anderen?
