Join us for a mini exhibition and provoking OSCAM Speak Session on Ocotber 21 with artist and graphic designer Kevin Rooi.

Coming to the Netherlands from the ABC islands, Kevin arrived with expectations of opportunity, but instead was met with an identity crisis. Despite holding a Dutch passport, he was seen as neither fully Dutch nor truly international. He existed in an in-between space, where his background was often misunderstood or ignored. The education system didn’t account for the gap between Caribbean and Dutch academic standards. He struggled to keep up in classrooms where teachers couldn’t connect with his cultural perspective.

In response, he turned to creativity. For his graduation project, he created Typomento, a visual exploration of Papiamento. His goal was to make the language visible and to share his culture in a way that opened minds rather than closed doors. The project helped him reconnect with his roots and challenges the idea that design must fit a narrow definition.

After graduating, the barriers persisted. He was told he was “too creative,” “not a cultural fit,” or simply rejected for not speaking fluent Dutch. In rooms where diversity was celebrated on the surface, true inclusion remained rare.

What began as a school project evolved into his creative studio. Typomento is his voice and his form of freedom. It is a response to exclusion and a celebration of identity. Through this festival, he shares his story and poses a powerful question: Who is truly free to belong?

Biography Kevin Rooi

Kevin Rooi is a multidisciplinary designer/ Lettering Artist born in the Caribbean, now living in the Netherlands. Like the Caribbean, Kevin is full of energy and passion which he integrates into each of his designs with a splash of multi-culture that makes them awesome and unique.

OSCAM x Vrijdenkers Festival Typomento: Roots of Resistance By Kevin Rooi

Kom op 21 oktober naar een mini-expositie en prikkelende OSCAM Speak Session met kunstenaar en grafisch ontwerper Kevin Rooi.

Toen Kevin vanuit de ABC-eilanden naar Nederland kwam, had hij verwachtingen van kansen en mogelijkheden. In plaats daarvan werd hij geconfronteerd met een identiteitscrisis. Ondanks zijn Nederlands paspoort werd hij niet als volledig Nederlands gezien, maar ook niet echt als internationaal. Hij bevond zich in een tussenruimte, waar zijn achtergrond vaak werd miskend of genegeerd. Het onderwijssysteem hield geen rekening met de kloof tussen de Caribische en Nederlandse academische standaarden. In de klas worstelde hij om bij te blijven, terwijl docenten geen aansluiting konden vinden bij zijn culturele perspectief.

Als reactie daarop wendde hij zich tot creativiteit. Voor zijn afstudeerproject ontwikkelde hij Typomento, een visuele verkenning van het Papiaments. Zijn doel was de taal zichtbaar te maken en zijn cultuur te delen op een manier die deuren opent in plaats van sluit. Het project hielp hem zijn wortels opnieuw te omarmen en daagde het idee uit dat design altijd binnen een nauwe definitie moet passen.

Na zijn afstuderen bleven de barrières bestaan. Hij kreeg te horen dat hij “te creatief” was, “niet binnen de cultuur paste” of werd simpelweg afgewezen omdat hij geen vloeiend Nederlands sprak. In ruimtes waar diversiteit aan de oppervlakte werd gevierd, bleek echte inclusie zeldzaam.

Wat begon als een schoolproject groeide uit tot zijn creatieve studio. Typomento is zijn stem en zijn vorm van vrijheid. Het is een antwoord op uitsluiting en een viering van identiteit. Via dit festival deelt Kevin zijn verhaal en stelt hij een krachtige vraag: Wie is werkelijk vrij om erbij te horen?

Biography Kevin Rooi
Kevin Rooi is een multidisciplinair ontwerper en lettering artist, geboren in het Caribisch gebied en nu woonachtig in Nederland. Net als het Caribisch gebied zelf, is Kevin vol energie en passie, die hij in elk ontwerp verwerkt. Met een vleugje multiculturele invloeden maakt hij zijn werk krachtig, bijzonder en uniek.
