Follow the Leader Leader is a participative salsa dancing and dinner performance hosted by How Do You Eat Collective (Jose Hopkins, Silvana Hurtado Dianderas). Participants will be guided in learning and dancing salsa while enjoying Peruvian-inspired soups and drinks. Through the repetition of salsa steps, you are invited to join in a collective celebration of home away from home—dancing, eating, and drinking together in an atmosphere of festivity and belonging. It is an invitation to embrace the joy of being together, offering a temporary home to those who might feel homesick as we create community through movement, music, and food.

Follow the Leader Leader emerges from our desire to recreate a bit of home in the Netherlands through shared movement and communal eating, as we used to do back home. The performance creates a festive yet thoughtful moment, exploring themes of migration, homesickness, and cultural blending in a way that’s both comical and critical. The act of dancing together brings attention to the way bodies move and interact, touching on gender roles, performativity, and the technologies of the body, all while keeping the mood light and joyful. It's an opportunity to reflect on how we create a sense of belonging and identity through collective experiences, even in unfamiliar places.

This experience is for anyone looking to connect with others through dance and shared meals, whether you already love salsa or have never danced before. It’s especially for those who feel the pull of home or who want to create a sense of commonality and togetherness in a new space. We invite you to join us if you want to dance, laugh, and enjoy some good food while reflecting on what home means to you. Just bring comfortable shoes to dance in.

How Do You Eat is an ongoing project in which Jose Hopkins and Silvana Hurtado Dianderas explore the storytelling possibilities in designing cooking/eating experiences. They have an interdisciplinary perspective for every occasion, approaching them from three different yet interconnected components: the cooked food and food utensils, the experience’s performative aspect, and the participative lecture’s dramaturgy.
