Passions
Overview
Passions: Philosophy Salon
When was the last time that you strongly felt something, so much that it took full hold of you? In the seventeenth century, such feelings were called 'passions' - intense emotions and experiences that could subdue, inspire, blind, and control. It is easy to view passions as inherently disruptive - something that we need to regulate, or even purge. And so some people engage in advanced meditation practices or different forms of self-discipline to move away from passions and create a life of calm. But what good is life without passions? Without passions, there is no beauty, no direction, and no flow. In this Philosophy Salon, we will look at the role of intense feelings and their relation to energetic flow. Is life without passion empty? Are passions opposed to the better, more rational parts of ourselves?
