Het Philip Zoubek Trio werd in 2016 opgericht met het doel een eigenzinnige benadering te ontwikkelen wat betreft de rijke traditie van de bezetting piano, bas en drums. De muziek van het trio kenmerkt zich door vloeiende overgangen tussen compositie en improvisatie. De kern ervan wordt gevormd door het organische samenspel van de drie muzikanten en de innerlijke logica van hun interactie.
Door gebruik te maken van technieken voor geprepareerde piano, effectpedalen, xylofoon en synthesizers verbreedt het trio het klankspectrum van de klassieke bezetting en creëert het klanklandschappen die ver buiten het vertrouwde treden: rauwe glissandi ontmoeten de verfijning van kamermuziek, percussieve aanzetten gaan samen met klokachtige resonanties, en naïeve melodieën worden gecombineerd met vervormde riffs. Het resultaat is een verruimde, hedendaagse benadering van improvisatie – muziek waarin akoestische en elektronische klanken elkaar doordringen, kleuren en ontregelen.
Het trio presenteert zijn nieuwe werk *Enigma* (in oktober verschenen bij Boomslang Records). Dit meerdelige stuk keert steeds weer terug naar vertrouwd klankterrein en ontleent zijn raadselachtige karakter aan het samenspel tussen nabijheid en vervreemding, structurele helderheid en onvoorspelbaarheid in de klank.

The Philip Zoubek Trio was founded in 2016 with the idea of developing a distinctive approach to the rich tradition of the piano, bass, and drums format. Seamless transitions between composition and improvisation define the trio's music – at its core lies the organic interplay of the three musicians and the inner logic of their interaction.
Through prepared piano techniques as well as the use of effect pedals, xylophone, and synthesizers, the trio expands the sonic spectrum of the classic lineup, opening up soundscapes far beyond the familiar: brutal glissandi meet chamber-music delicacy, percussive attacks meet bell-like resonances, naive melodies meet distorted riffs. The result is an expanded, contemporary approach to improvisation – music in which acoustic and electronic sound permeate, color, and destabilize one another.
The trio presents its new piece Enigma, released in October on Boomslang Records – a multi-part work that keeps returning to familiar sonic territory, drawing its enigmatic quality from precisely this interplay of closeness and strangeness, structural clarity and sonic unpredictability.
