We therefore ask the participants to join with a spirit of openness and mutual respect. Different opinions are welcome and can be discussed with Peter, the referent, and each other during the Q&amp;A. Some of the topics discussed may hit closer to home for some, so please be kind to one another. Appointed stewards will be available throughout the event to support you. If you experience discomfort, stress, or any unpleasant emotions, feel free to approach them for assistance and care. Any form of discrimination, including racism, islamophobia, and antisemitism, as well as any call for violence will not be tolerated. No provocative attributes, clothing or slogans may be used, and no face-covering clothing will be allowed. There is a maximum capacity of 90 persons. People who have not registered, will be asked to quietly leave the building. No photos will be taken of those attending the lecture. Who is Peter Laban?Peter Laban was born in Hollandia, Dutch New Guinea and came to the Netherlands for good at the age of fourteen, in 1962. He graduated from high school in 1965 and studied tropical soil science and forestry at the Agricultural University (now Wageningen University &amp; Research) from 1966 to 1974. After 5 years of work at the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN) in forestry projects in Senegal and Nepal, he did a second engineering study in Development Economics in Wageningen. After that he worked in Burkina Faso (1982-1986) for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a community forestry project. Coming back to The Netherlands in 1986, he was employed by the IAC in Wageningen (International Agricultural Centre) with a training and advisory role in community forestry. From 1994 to 2003 he worked with ETC in Leusden, a non-for-profit consultancy in the field of sustainable agriculture and management of natural resources. In 2002, Peter moved to Ramallah, Palestine where he lived with his Palestinian wife, Huda Odeh, and two daughters until 2020. He has worked in both the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as in surrounding countries such as Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Yemen, and Oman. For part of that period, he was employed by Oxfam, IUCN and Care International, for another part he had assignments as an independent expert. All this in the areas of institutional and policy aspects of environmental management and participatory management and use of land and water resources in local communities. In those 18 years, he has come to know well the situation in Palestine, both in the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip. In 2010, he carried out for OCHA (Organisation for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid) and the WFP (World Food Programme) a study on the very negative social and economic impact of Israeli control over a 2 km wide buffer zone within the Gaza Strip, where the main agricultural areas are located. In 2016 he conducted a study on the political economy in the Palestinian territories for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of an evaluation of 8 years of development cooperation financing in the Palestinian Territories (report presented by the Ministry to the Dutch House of Representatives). In 2020, Peter returned to Wageningen with his Palestinian family, mainly for the further education of his two daughters, Yaralisa and Anneloor. Rowed as a student and veteran, he now plays weekly table tennis, is gardening and cycles for relaxation and is heavily involved in all developments in Palestine and Israel.
