For our second session we will read…

This session we have a special guest: Ype Driessen! We will read his autobiographical photo comic The Last Gay Man on Earth (2023), originally published in Dutch as Het Nadeel van de Twijfel (2020). Ype has been making short-form photo comics for over 20 years in which he documents his own life as a gay man living in Amsterdam. His comics often address anxieties around dating, body image and aging in a brutally honest and humorous fashion. In his first full-length photo comic, Ype tells the story of doubt and anxiety that he feels when his boyfriend announces that he’s moving to the United States for a research fellowship, and he has to decide whether he wants to come with him or not.

Ype Driessen will join us for this session to talk about what inspired him to write the book and give some insights in his process of making photo comics.

This Book club will be hosted by Looi van Kessel, assistant professor in literary studies and gender studies at Leiden University, who specializes in LGBTQIA+ literature. The sessions will be held in English.
