A GLOBAL NETWORK OF LOCAL FASHIONING COALITIONS TO DECENTRALISE & DECOLONISE FASHION KNOWLEDGE, CREATION AND SHARING

Commons are alternatives to growth-based capitalist systems, emerging when communities collaborate to self-provision or to reach shared goals in fair and democratic ways. OC.M, a project powered by activist group Fashion Act Now, exists to help the Fashion Commons flourish.Assembly for a Fashion Commons is integral to how OC.M operates. These People’s Assemblies engage stakeholders, practitioners and concerned members of the public in participatory and democratic decision-making processes. This October, we bring the assembly format to GFA24 to explore how a transformation from industry to commons might look for Europe. We understand that this transformation in Europe cannot happen without solidarity with the global south. Sara Arnold (OurCommon.Market, UK) will introduce the concept of degrowth. Elise van der Laan (Joline Jolink, Netherlands), Kavita Parmar (Xtant, Mallorca, Spain), Ivana Biocina (Institute of Sustainable Fashion, Croatia) and Milja Vukovic (Wild Belgrade & For Less Waste and More Happiness, Serbia) will bring perspectives on localised, community-based clothing and textile cultures from within the EU as well as its peripheries. Ruth Ogier (War on Want, UK) will give a global perspective on a degrowth transformation, and specifically how we downscale European industry without leaving those dependent on it behind. Karishma Kelsey (New Zealand) and Ashish Kothari (Tapestry of Alternatives, India) will speak about the nature of radical alternatives. The speakers will address some of the contentious issues around the subject, in the hope to build common ground and lay the foundations for solidarity and collaboration as we build the Fashion Commons as the alternative to Big Fashion.

During this hour, all participants will be invited to reflect and deliberate on what they’ve heard from the speakers. We want to create an inclusive space where everyone’s voice is heard.

The final part of this event will be for the integration of ideas, setting the basis for ongoing collaboration. The whole group will work together to come up with decisions to take forward. We aim to build common ground and lay the foundations for solidarity and collaboration as we build the Fashion Commons as the alternative to Big Fashion.
