About this event
Rewilding is an innovative and inspirational way of restoring Europe’s wild nature. It’s about allowing natural processes to reshape and enhance ecosystems with the ambition to create spaces where nature and people can thrive in harmony.
Conservation efforts over the past 30 years, in Europe and farther afield, showed that simply protecting our remaining nature is not enough, which is why nature recovery must be prioritised far more on both the climate and biodiversity agendas.
We believe that large scale recovery of nature should be a key priority, as there is an urgent need to drive forward and scale up practical rewilding. To realize this, practitioners have co-formulated a set of principles that characterise and guide rewilding in a European context.
REWILDING PRINCIPLES
These principles show that rewilding is about letting nature lead, offering natural solution to mitigate environmental, social, economic and climatological challenges on a large scale. But rewilding is also about the way we work and think. It’s about working together, exchanging knowledge, helping people reconnect with nature, boosting nature-based economies and creating a healthy and sustainable future.
Join us and discover how Rewilding Europe is driving forward and scaling up practical rewilding and applying rewilding principles in the field. Deli Saavedra, one of the pioneers of rewilding in Europe will speak about how the intrinsic value of rewilding shaped his life and forged his drive to promote and accelerate the restoration of ecosystems.
REWILDING IN ACTION - DANUBE DELTA
Mykhailo Nesterenko, the Danube Delta rewilding area Team Leader will showcase practical rewilding in the Danube Delta, cross border area of Romania and Ukraine and Europe’s largest remaining natural wetland. The Danube Delta is one of the initial rewilding pilots in Europe, where rewilding has been taking place for almost a decade. Mykhailo will tell you all about the actions on the ground, challenges faced and lessons learned. He will show you how rewilding reshaped the Danube Delta by helping nature’s inherent healing powers gain strength.
